The Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. The huggers have won. After 149 years they have the finally in early May 2017.

A little history. In 1880 the Ringling Brother's Circus was struggling to survive some misfortunes. The Mayor of Cascade, Iowa and others in town helped them put together a show that enabled the Circus to pay it debts and have operating money to continue. Al Ringling several years later made the statement that citizens of Cascade could attend for free. Ringling Brothers honored that promise. I can remember going to see the Circus with my younger siblings (1960s) and my Mother showing her driver's license to let us attend free. We would not have been able to afford to have gone to see the Circus if she would have had to pay for us to get in.

Here is a link to an article about this:

I have fond memories of seeing the circus. I will also admit that my kids might have seen a circus once or twice. My grand kids not at all. Today's world is jut different in the types of entertainment that is currently popular.
The Ringling Bros and Cascade History

Dad took us kids by where the circus was setting up when I was a kid. The only animals that I saw were some elephants being used to hoist the big tent. The circus had a lot of old chain drive trucks; don't know what the trucks were used for back then. We couldn't afford to go to the circus though.

I didn't get to see the circus until I was an adult. Just happened to be in Milwaukee when the circus was in town and I could afford a ticket then.

I've seen the circus train go by the last two years on the rail line a mile from our house; guess I won't look for it anymore.

Yes, some of it is animal rights... but some is just out-moded entertainment, as well. As JD mentioned, they have seen hard times before. And they are a consolidated industry- hence the name. At least two companies merged together there, and maybe more.

It is a lot of work to "stay cool" and market a product people want to keep coming back for. As farmers, we can market corn or livestock any day of the week. We may not like the price, but we can sell what we want when we want. And the elevator or packer will want more next year.

Industries like the circus need to find ways to keep people coming back, and that is a bigger challenge.

I've never liked a circus, rodeo or things like dogs shows, much rather see animals in a setting doing what they were intended like a Beagle hunting rabbits rather
than being lead around some ring.Of course if others like that sort of stuff thats their choice, looks like not many want to go to a circus anymore. That's what is great about
Capitalism you either supply what people with the money to spend want or you go down the tubes and something more popular fills the void.

The only circus left will be the one in WASHINGTON!!!!!!!!!!

Agree with you on showing animals, much better out where they belong. Not doing and looking silly the way someone thought they might be amusing.

One other circus definition of going to work
is where you get paid to see the circus
everyday . but i wont argue that yours is
number one

Wonder what will happen to all the animals now? And the people... I suspect a majority of the employees will have a really hard time adjusting into mainstream life.

That is a huge operation! If you've ever seen the train they use to transport their equipment, animals, people, it seems to go on forever!

Can't imagine what the operating costs are for them, surprised it was ever able to break even.

Amen also. I can't wait till Friday. I can't say much more or I will get bounced. It is just so sad that both of my parents have passed while that @@?5/_78&%$ has been out playing golf and trying to bury our country.
