Hauling charges

I am a very small operator. I bale square bales of hay and sell them in the winter. This year people have wanted me to haul them. I started charging $1 extra for up to 20 miles and $1.50 for 20 to 60 miles with a 32 bale minimum. Some people act as if I shot them. Am I out of reason? I am charging $3 for my Prairie and $4 for my bermuda. The bales are a good solid weight, and are wire tied.

I use to charge 40/ton stacked off the back of my truck for local hauls. Charged more if I had to rathole it into a barn.

You're haul: your price. No one says you have to haul it. If they think you're to high: they are free to hire someone else. If you fear losing a sale: you will have to decide if it is profitable or not. I personally would rather not sell than loose money on it. I figured out a long time ago that I can go broke without working myself broke.

I sell mine for $3.50 a bale off the wagon, and a dollar more every time I have to handle it after that. So delivered would be $5.50. If they can't stand the price, they are welcome to haul it, three bales at a time, in the back of their SUV, or hire some kid that will do it with Dad's truck, for beer money.

If you have good hay they will be back. Years ago use to by some hay. Tried the sale barn a time or too. After that I just called this guy and told him to bring me a load. Made nice tight bales. After the first load and the price it was just bring me a load after that.

Bruce, like you we are small time. Somewhere around 18-20,000 bales a year. Let the wife take over pricing about 4 years ago. She charges $1.00 a bale over 10 miles and $2.00 per bale over 25 miles plus so much for fuel and/or trailer use. She's greedy but our hay always sells out and to repeat customers year after year. No you are not out of line. Your time and truck are worth something. Why do you think they charge shipping on a lot of your tractor parts? Time is money. Don't believe me, just ask my boss [wife]. She's not bashfull !!

Price your hay to make a profit, delivery is extra .50 to a dollar in my county .We dont fill lofts stacked on the ground.Good hay will sell dont let the stingy buyer beat you down

I get 4 bucks a bale here for straw delivered to local COOP about 3 miles from my farm,,( they buy 400-800 bales a year from me) small square hay bales I only make if they pick them up,, but still get 4-5 bucks a bale in the field,, my thoughts are if I put them in a shed and then loaded them again on a trailer then unload and stack them at their place I would charge at least double what you are,, but then hay here may bring more coin as we have only one cutting a year,, unless you just like the exercise I would not do it for any less and if they do not like it,, like others said They haul it
cnt
