ford 601 workmaster

I am restoring a ford 1958 601 workmaster but I am not sure it is a 601. It could be a 801. The model is stamped 851-L. The serial number is 20886. I am still tearing it down to replace every thing needed PLUS. I planned to paint the hood vermillion red and the fenders and grille medium grey but it could be a 801. The engine block has 310609 stamped. The 601 does not show a model 851 but the 801 does have a model 851 with the same serial range. I am really perplexed about this and I hope some one can steer me right. I rely on yesterday's forum for all my replacement help.

The term restore is pet peeve of mine and hate the term since MOST only fix not a true restore because to restore it manes to bring the whole thing back to what it was the day it rolled out of the factory.

As for what you have it tells you by the model number. It is an 801 series model 851 which has a 5 peed transmission non live PTO

310609 is a 172 cu in motor so that makes it a 801
851L would be a 801 with a 5 speed trans and no live PTO. It left the factor as a LP tractor.
20886 makes it a 1958

Another way to tell the 801 from a 601 is the grill and rear end size.

The 801 has a egg crate grill.

The 601 does not.

I see way to many who say restore but then all they do is fix few things and slap a paint job on it and that is not a true restore to be a real true restore it has to be made back to what it was new from top to bottom front to back.
