It is your life, live it well

My daughter went to college in Milwaukee. She had gone to Italy as a foreign exchange student in high School and also for one semester in college. She had worked in Mil. for a few years, and now is going back to Italy for a Masters Degree.

I only mention all of this to illustrate two points.
1) It is your life, live it well. and
2) I believe we all live the lives that we choose for ourselves.

We make choices every day that affect ourselves and others. Some are poor choices and others are much better, but in the end it is all of us living our own lives.

I wish I had had a better understanding of this, as a younger person, and had made some better choices.
Now remember, this is only one man's opinion, but I hope it will help someone also.

I was always too practical. Never wanted to spend money on any "foolishness". Didn't go anywhere when I was younger. Wife inherited $15,000 right after college- we were going to bicycle around Europe for a couple months, but (by agreement) ended up using it as a down payment on our first farm, and the saga of the "crazy horse lady" was off and running.

My kids were much more adventurous. All three went to Europe after getting out of college and saving up a few bucks. Daughter (the youngest) was the most adventurous- She did a semester abroad in Costa Rica in college, then after college spent several months with relatives in Germany (and learned enough German to get by), couple months in Ecuador, some time in China and Mongolia, etc., etc. She worked for Alaska Airlines so could fly free, which sure helped. Has been all over the place, and says she is glad she did it.

I don't regret that aspect of my life, but do kind of wish we'd have done the bicycling thing way back when.

What area of Italy she going to?? Much of Italy is very nice looking and the people can be very friendly but then there are places like Naples where it is pretty much the arm pit of Eurphet SP Been to a few place in Italy and enjoy most other then the Naples area and if you knew where to go in Naples it wasn't to bad.

Some folks just do not learn to control their own destiny. Sounds like your daughter has learned that from a young age. You Go Girl!!

Did she go to Italy for the free masters and doctorate programs? Two friends of mine got their medical degrees in Italy because it was free. I find that astounding considering they were US citizens. No wonder Italy is broke.

Not sure what you mean about living. Are you saying living entails living?

Seems whenever I go somewhere it is always nice to get back home

The problem with that is you can't see the end from the beginning. When you marry you don't know what you're getting yourself in to. When you train for a career it may dry up long before you were ready to retire.

I don't remember but there was a country singer, (woman) who sang a song and the words I remember are "I'd like to be 16 again and know what I know now". It's the truth. I think I will look on youtube for that song.

Thats what i thought but my dad had other plans. All i ever wanted to do was farm. I left the farm for a short time and built up on my own was ready to start my own herd my dad found out said he wanted me on the home farm . Three guys told me flat out to not do it . I should have listen to this advice my dad did every thing he could to run things his way eventually i won through and black mailed him to giving up the farm. Its been a hard life and it doesn't help living in a neighborhood with people thinking there entitled to anything they want. Living your own life sounds great but you have to be allowed or supported to do it.

One of the nicest area I was in was a town called Tresick SP which is about half way up Italy along the coast. Boy did those gals look fine but then I was also in my 20s then also

Right around age 30, I figured out I had gone as far as I could with my job. I guess I was kind of going through a "mid-life-crisis"?

I've never liked cold, snow, and mud. We seriously talked about moving away. But I didn't dare venture into the unknown with a wife and two young children dependent on me. I quit my job and started farming!! It was like a new lease on life for me, being my own boss. But the money sure was tight, for years!

Now another 30 some years on, I could wish I had the courage to have made the move. If we had had parents on either side who would have helped us make a decision, that would have been nice. But then if we had parents (they were all close by) who were supportive, rather than trying to take advantage of us, then we probably wouldn't have even considered moving!

I have done a lot of things in my life. The one thing I tell my kids is to work towards bettering yourself every single day. This can be learning new things or traveling to new places. It is not setting on your butt playing video games and eating junk food. It also is working steady at some thing too. It sounds nice say your going to take some time off to enjoy the world. Just do not take too much time off. My biggest mistake was not taking the time to "smell the roses" when I was younger. You never know when your time is up. You can fall ill tomorrow and then not be able to kick you heels up anymore. My one sister took her whole 20s off traveling the world and has been playing catch up ever since. She can show you pictures from around the world but has yet to live in her own home. So one has to find a balance.
