The perfect tree saw

I bought one twenty years ago. Used it to clear sixty acres of cedar trees with an M Farmall with Farmhand loader (old style).

Tractor was under powered for the saw. Angle of attack into the tree was critical to saw but after a little practice it worked pretty good. If you line up good you can cut two or three trees in one pass. I could cut trees up to about 8" at the ground in one pass. If you switch sides you could cut larger, but that was tedious. Of course the M was manual transmission and did not have power steering or live hydraulics. I was feeding in the pasture and would cut trees for a hour or so after feeding. I never used it again. Would be ideal on a dozer. Mine was a little wider and I had to cut on the angle to avoid the teeth taking too big of a cut.

I can do more with my Bobcat and shear but I like the tree saw. Sold it to a neighbor and he died before trying to use it. Don't know where it went.

That looks to me like a solution...in search of a problem. I think that there are much better ways to handle cutting trees. Chainsaws would be my choice for smaller trees where I would just want them cut down, but for larger trees with commercial value the feller-buncher is much faster and safer. That rig might be a good way to separate a customer from his money though.

I saw something like you posted on TV that would cut a huge tree in seconds, then it would strip the branches off before they stacked cut trees in a pile.

Many loggers get killed, not exactly safe job using a chainsaw. Logging may be more dangerous than farming.

Chain saws are not much of a choice for eastern red cedar, our main pest. Lots of low branches. And if you've got a thousand trees chain saws can be tiring. The tree saw cuts them well and is a good choice with the right size tractor. They also will push surface rock out of the way without damage to the saw so the cut can be 1" or so above ground. They do not cut smaller trees well, under two inches the saw tends to hang up on the tree and bend it over instead of cutting. Dozers tear up the our native grass too much and a hydraulic tree shear is slower.

Very few loggers in N MN use a chainsaw to cut trees down, only to trim their load before hitting the highway. Modern logging should be a very safe profession if you follow the rules.

Rotary mowers for a Ford tractor have been around for many many yrs Bush Hog was one of the first popular brands

In my lifetime, I know of 6 people killed cutting down trees. One was a professional logger. A widow branch made his wife a widow. The others were not professional, just cutting firewood.

I'll pay someone to put a tree on the ground. Then I'll do the rest of the work.

I first saw one on a dozer with a 10 ft push pole. He slid that blade down base on one side of the tree, backed up and went down the other side, and tapped it over with the pole. That big old cotton wood went over in three minutes.
