Jeff's bulk tank compressor went up today. That's the second used one since he started farming. Enough is enough. He's got a new one coming through the Co-op. They'll take it out of his milk check over time. I just spent well over $300 of his money today for a ring gear and throwout bearing for the dump truck, too. Looks like 2017 is gonna start out right where 2016 left off. Sheesh!

They are picking up milk every milking until he gets the new compressor installed.

He did pick up a springing heifer about a month out for a decent price at the sale barn today. She's a bit on the small side, (1100 lbs. or so) but is a very nice looking animal and the price was right. ($900)

One thing about farming, there is always something to do and always a place for any extra (or future) money you might have. Lol!

Are they picking up the milk before it's cooled? Geez, suggest that to the milk marketing board here, and...gulp. Ben

The milk goes to the Kraft cheese plant here in Lowville 7 miles away. It will be picked up immediately after he is done milking.

Here, milk will not get picked up if is over 40 degrees Fahrenheit, even if is going to a cheese plant. All milk must meet the same standards, regardless of its final use age,. Ben

Back in the early 70's dad bought a bred heifer for $500 and we thought that was outrageous....she was named "the 500 dollar cow". I think milk was around $8.

That is one of the nightmares in dairy farming. Speaking of heifers, sale barn has some coming in and then you say your son only paid 900, ahh I was thinking of going to just see how much they go for but I have this problem of bidding, not an issue but it is the last thing I need. I need another shed before I get more, but it sure has been on my mind of going to the sale. It is like trying to rip a kid away from the candy isle.

My son has a top price he will pay for any replacement he is considering. He is very good about not going one penny over that maximum bid. His attitude is that there is a dairy replacement sale just about every Wed. and if he doesn't find what he is looking for this week, then there is always next week.

I might suggest a Duplex compressor. The idea is that each compressor alternates, and if more air is need they both kick in. You can take one off line for service, and still have air.

Wouldn't a water cooler work to cool the milk.. Like a stainless steel pipe with a coil inside, like a heat exchanger. With cold water running through should cool the milk to the temperature of the water. Length of the pipe would depend on the amount of cows you're milking at the same time.
Just a suggestion,
Dick

They make a pre cooler like that, my brother uses one. The waste water is piped to the water trough for the cows. Saves lots of power cooling the milk down, extra benefit in the winter is the water doesn't freeze up.
