Good morning everyone, long story short. I am helping my uncle do some repairs to his tractor. A massey fergusson 180. He asked me to order him a couple of rebuild seal kits.one for the powersteering pump. Wich I already ordered and a rebuild kit for the part in the picture. But I have no idea what is called. I know it is related to the steering as well. Can anyone help me identify it. Thank you in advance.[/img]

Dad had a MF285. The "valve" on the end of the steering shaft called an "orbit motor " very expensive item.

Does the steering wheel feel as if it is jamming when turning ?
If so the problem could be the needle bearings in the column jamming up and not the hydra motor.
If you search mf180 steering there are some older posts about the bearings and replacing with bushings.
Q.

Wow. I posted my question this morning and already a lot of information and advice. Thank you all. From what I understand he already rebuilt the power steering pump many years ago. The steering motor however has never been touched. I will definetly pass on the information on how delicate this parts can be. I am starting to think that this part may not be ment to be rebuilt. I have not found a kit for it. Does anybody have more info on this?

The kit for the pump was easy to find.

Thanks again for all the advice and info.

If the pump is leaking externally, he may be able to find orings and seals for it at a bearing supply.

If there is a problem with the performance, chances are it can't be rebuilt.

If he does take it apart, be very observant! Mark how the housings go back together, go slowly, work over a clean towel to catch anything that falls out, take pictures! Those will go back together many ways, but only work one!

Got into that on a forklift once... Didn't pay attention, ended up taking that thing apart a dozen times! Finally got it after the dealer told me it was impossible to repair.

I don't know what you or your uncle's level of experience or mechanical knowledge is but just want to forwarn you. I'm not familiar with repairing that particular tractor, but many hydraulic power steering components have close assembly tolerances, internal part timing and strict part reinstallation steps. It is almost imperative that you have a repair manual to follow for these types of repair. Good Luck and welcome to YT.

That's what I've been told on those, not to even attempt to rebuild one myself.
On the Olivers though, there is one seal at the shaft that can be changed. I have done those.

I am working on a 180 now. I took the steering units to a former dealer to be rebuilt. I am now into the hydraulics and transmission. These 180's are a pain in the rear to work on. When I get mine fixed it will be sold. Who ever buys it will probably get a bargain. It will have a rebuilt engine, power steering , hydraulics and transmission. And don't ever want another one.

I replaced mine a few years ago with a new modern steering motor, had to do a tad bit of fabricating and lost the tilt steering, but my tractor steers like a dream. I don't think they are a pain to work on, you ought to try to work on some of this late model stuff or change the spark plugs in a newer pickup. I've had mine for close to 30 years and they are a very dependable, economical and easy to maintain tractor. I got over 10,000 hours on mine and rebuilt the engine once and this tractor is 2 years older than me......JB
