John Deere water pump

need to replace the water pump on my 70 gas serial # 293xx it does not have bypass tube and the new one does how do I make this work? should I try and have mine rebuilt? one person said I would have to plug the hole some how but didn't have any advise also just got a used starter today noticed the start switch has a ground stud on it do I need to ground this style some how? this starter came out of a LPgas tractor thanks Howard

The cooling system works better with a functional bypass. The 60 needs it more than a 70.
The stud on the starter is to supply power direct to the ignition coil while cranking.

IF your water pump was not broken but just leaking just install a new bearing and seal. It just takes a press and some time. It is much cheaper too. Even if you need a new impeller the rebuild cost is less than 1/3 of what a new/rebuilt one sells for.

I'm going to call out JD Seller on this one, most impellers are about the price of a new aftermarket complete pump, maybe not on new gen's and newer, but they are on the two bangers. I rebuild water pumps too, but not with the prices lately. Steiner's number for the wp plug JDS1831, this comes with the oring, lube plug and oring with a little silicone. chris

I agree. Rebuilt the pump on my 620 several years back (about 5) and the impeller from Deere was close to $100.

I have not used JD parts for two cylinder pumps in years. There too high. There are after market parts that are reasonable. It also depends on the condition of the original pump. You do not always need the impeller. So All I was trying to get him to do is look at his to see if it would rebuild easily.

Those old style pumps nearly always need a new impeller as the seal is pressed into the housing and the impeller turns. By a new pump and install the o,ring and the plug lube with oil it will stay in the pump

commercial pump Houston 713 864 5199 rebuild about any pump. Has about any impeller and parts very reasonable

I've seen the bypass plug for sale on the aftermarket sites. Don't know if Deere sells them. They appear to be a force fit plug, and another poster mentioned them having an "O" ring.

I recently rebuilt the w pump on my 630, and Deere was the cheapest price on new bearing and seal.

I've only rebuilt 4 or 5 Deere pumps so I'm no expert, but I've never had to replace anything but the bearing and seal and the little retainer clip. Lucky I guess.
