My 2010 Chevrolet Silverado is just out of warranty. On star is 20.00 month. I did get one time reduction to 15/month for 6 months. My question is I only want emergency call service and possibly hands free phone. Is there ANY other company that can use the satellite link to my truck? Might be some smart folks than can hack into my satellite link? should anyone wish to speck just by phone 812 six nine nine oo

Chevrolet has offered us free on-star for 3 years. They've made that same offer several times now. We've already got cell phones. Don't need or want on-star.

My 2011 Silverado did not have hands free phone once I stopped paying for OnStar minutes. My 2015 has the hands free Bluetooth and works with any cell phone regardless of OnStar. Currently have the cheapest OnStar in my truck and wife's GMC. They gave us a break with two vehicles and paying a year at a time for $10 per month but that is just emergency coverage. I don't know of any hack.

The onstar emergency should still work regardless of whether you pay for the full service or not. Just like 911 will work on any charged cell phone.

When they were signing me up after I bought the truck the hands free phone was a completely separate thing from onstar. You bought minutes, which you had to use within a certain number of days, or you lose them.

Basically a prepaid cell program. I bought the minimum number of minutes to try it out. Couldn't make it work. Kept saying "no phone connected" any time I tried to make a call. Lost all the minutes.

I linked my cell phone to the truck with bluetooth and have been using that for the past year and a half.

"other companies" I think you are asking anyone else except GM. Well that is the police--but then they really aren't company. They can shut your vehicle off once you report it stolen or hijacked. Don't believe me ask GM.

You can connect your cell phone through Bluetooth and use the truck phone for
free.I use the onstar, but have never paid for phone minutes in my 2014 silverado.

I just got a 2017 Silverado and when I shut the radio off at the steering wheel then the phone operator comes on. This happens every time and I cannt fiqure out how or if I can eleminate the phone operator.

Had a silverado about a 2014 I think was stolen. Since onstar was not activated both sherriff and GM dealer plus the company said they could not find or shut down truck.

I'm not sure why you would want to use the Onstar calling feature; it's quite expensive compared with your cell phone. I don't know about your 2010, but newer GM vehicles will pair with your bluetooth cell phone, just like a headset. My wife's 2012 Acadia has that feature.

As far as the basic Onstar emergency service goes, it's proprietary to GM. Either you pay Onstar or you don't get the service. Check with your insurance company, though. If you have Onstar service, you may be able to get a discount on your insurance premium.

It's not a "satellite link", BTW. Onstar uses standard digital cell phone service. The only "satellite" part is the GPS receiver that's integral to every Onstar-equipped vehicle.

I haven't tried it but the white cross, red background or vise versa....forget, will bring help regardless. Ifyou want to chat or other non emergency you can call the operator and she (usually a she) will fix you up with a renewed contract....not your best deal of course. My book isn't handy but I think if you are in an accident they know and come online.

One thing nobody addresses is big brother watching, like the sound on your computer if left on, or the eyeball at the top of the screen not covered, or the new room things from Amazon and Google that talk to you......AND LISTEN......IN ON YOUR LIFE???????? Who knows.....aka The Green Hornet, The Shadow Knows, Boston Blackie, Inner Sactum, Dick Tracy wrist radio........

I was talking to a GMC salesman today. He said that The system runs on ATT. Many places out here that my Verizon works when the others don't. He also said that you could let the onstar run out and call to re-up for a month to get door unlocked etc. At such time, I will use the blue tooth connection with my phone. No sense in paying twice for phone service.

(quoted from post at 17:56:51 01/10/17) Had a silverado about a 2014 I think was stolen. Since onstar was not activated both sherriff and GM dealer plus the company said they could not find or shut down truck.

I don't know who told you that, or who was misinformed. I don't see how dealers can offer this kind of support but Onstar definitely can and they do it all the time. Onstar does not need an active subscription to be used for location info, all it needs is to be plugged in, a good battery and reception. I know of 3 GM vehicles recovered due to theft. I'm not sure what hoops they need to jump through to order a shut down though.

Reading the fine print on the OnStar system contract will make a lot of you cringe, especially if you already concerned about "big brother" or anyone else knowing where you are or tracking your movements. I short of physically removing the module or unplugging it the system is always alive and active.

Even if you don't take OnStar they still monitor your speed and location. They also keep tract of your oil changes.

Weak sisters who need someone to watch out for them around the clock also vote and are the main reason government is out of control. Why would anyone voluntarily let any organization monitor there every movement, much less pay for that ''service''?
