Finally in my new truck!

Finally got all the I's dotted and T's crossed and into my new truck. It has been quite an adventure to say the least. I'm looking forward to running it, but it's going to take some getting used to. After 4 years and over half a million miles I had figured out where most of the stuff was and what all the switches did in my other truck, now I have to start over again. Which is especially interesting when you go to hit the brakes and the peddle isn't there! Lol.

Anyways, here are the specs on it. It is a 2017 Kenworth 780 with a 470 hp pacar engine, an Eaton 10spd auto shift teansmission, twin screw, dual wheels and 48,000 miles. It is black. It has a 5 year 500,000 mile warranty that covers all the emissions and electrical including the wiring harness.

I will say it is truly amazing gown much cheap I collected in the last 4 years! Took half a day to clean out my old truck and a couple hours to get everything in the new one.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the pics.

You are probably better off getting a truck with 48K on it and let someone else work out the initial issues.

Is the 500K miles a pretty good target for truck life?

Brake is there, it's just in a different place so I missed it a xouple times when I needed it. Hopefully I have it down now.

DANG - Looks pretty "spiffy"!
Let us know when you get "your" graphics on it so we can pick you out from the rest of them Dart Drivers.
Let me know if you pass through central Illinois again - Will try to catch up with you.

Jim

Now you need to get a robot to drive it for you while you take a few days off now and then so that you can keep those wheels turning and the money coming in.

Look great Jon, I never heard of that kind of engine, but I wish you the best of luck with your new truck. Stay safe.

Nice truck: how are the automatics being received in the trucking world now?? Guess I am stuck in an older era. KW 900 with 13 speed yikes!!

Congrats Jon,

The cockpit looks like it belongs in the space shuttle.
Lots of switches and gadgets to play with.

Best of luck with the new unit.

your so excited you can barely type ! LOL.

Swing by here in Ohio as I have a couple of JD leaping deer decals I can stick on it for you.

Very nice!! I have drove Kenworth over 25 years and had great service from them, I have 2 now. Best of luck and lots of miles!!!

Thank you for the report, and pictures. Is this a purchase, or lease? I thought you had owned a Navistar, and that the Volvo was a purchase. But something I read made me think the Volvo was a lease.

Most of all, we'll be hoping for a long service life, and profitability. And maybe the wild jockeys will think a little harder before they bang up a KW!

Looks great,Jon. I always thought black looks best, but hard to keep clean. Wife and I both have black vehicles and we live on a gravel road, so a lot of washing happens here. Best of luck with the KW, you deserve a lot of it.

Congrats on the new ride! Hope it serves you well for many years/miles. I see y'all have the latest of the PeopleNet systems in the truck. We've started putting them in the last new trucks at Smithfield, does away with the keyboard. Do ya ever come into VA? Have a good time with your new wheels!!

Jon f Mn,Congratulations on your new ride loos good! I think you will like that 470 hp Pacar engine,Good engines and easy to get to and replace all the components. Not like that Volvo that you have to tear half the engine apart to replace a bad sensor and harness,I hate the way the sensors connect up,turbo and other components are hell to change on those Volvos.Good luck with it!

Nice looking truck, hope it does well by you. Seems like just a few months ago you were telling us about your "new" old one.

Very nice indeed. I hope you saved the "Mirrors" from the old truck....they could be set up as a "Decoy" for all the times yours got smashed by idiots who can't back a trailer....lol

Wow that is nice. I love driving and often thought about getting in a truck and seeing the country. I remember when you bought the Volvo. Doesn't seem like four years have gone by. Good luck and keep it moving.

Greg

Sharp looking truck, enjoy reading of your adventures around the country. Good luck with the new ride, looks very civilized compared to my old 83 COE freightliner.

All leases, paidmoff the IH, then bought the volvo. That was a 6 year lease that I kept for 4 years.

I would have to resist the placement of anything deer related, I have friends that are vegans.

Getting more and more. There is lots of resistance but that usually changes when they drive them for a while. You would be surprised how often I hear a driver say "I was mad when they gave it to me, but now I won't go back to manual".

I'm hoping for a million this time. The truck before the volvo had just a million mioes on it when I got the volvo. Around 500k is when you start with things like brake chambers and wheel seals, maybe 750k for a clutch, and most engines will go over a million pretty easy these days. I the wmmissions stuff holds up I hope to get to a million or retirement, which ever comes first.

I hope that Ultra-shift is better than the ones I used a couple years ago. They were good on the road, but a challenge around town. You would stop for a light, take your foot off the brake and hit the throtal to go, then wait (while rolling backwards) till the engine decided to do something (computers are a good thing). I got good at the two foot shuffle.
I see you have a Zonar, I hope it works as good for you as it does for us.

Looks sharp Jon! Might hurt your mileage a touch but after comparing your trucks in the pictures I'd say you just gotta put a sun visor on the new one. Not to jinx it for you but I think we should have some sort of raffle where we pick a date on the calendar for how soon some moron trades paint with you. You get half the winnings to put towards repairs.

The new truck looks very sharp Jon. Quite a lot of creature comforts for you.
I too remember when you got the Volvo. I remember reading your posts and a few follow up posts - I was thinking "wow, this guy really knows his business!" You had very intelligent observations and interesting findings to share with us.
Hard to believe 4 years already... Golly, where was I four years ago? One daughter was newborn...

I had a '77 Toyota Celica in black I bought new. It was the fastback copying the Ford GT Fastback (like Steve McQueen had/used). You are
right on......no more black for me.

Jon Great looking RIDE.I m jealous even tho I DON~T miss the road & the hassles that go with it. Happy truckin. Richard

nice truck

i've driven a couple eaton auto shift (auto grind) in rental semi tractors. kinda nice if in traffic but SLOW very SLOW shifting. it won't shift fast at all. usually have the trottle to the floor. computer does what ever it wants to. A good driver can out shift them. but like i said in town/city its nice not to have to rest your foot on the clutch and not doing alot of shifting between lights.

how do they work for hill decent? no mountains in Norther Indiana for me to try. don't drive for a living.

won't be long before the truck drives it's self . 10 speed auto shift what is this world coming to ??? guys can't even drive a standard shift anymore and god help them if there was to sticks to work. Then there is the way they are crashing them today i can not believe how many wrecks that are happening out there . this young set of drivers just plum can not drive . Myself i do not see where they are really learning how to drive in these socalled truck driving schools , they can not back a trailer , they don't know how to drive on bad roads , they can not drive on two lane roads . Sure glad i am OFF the road and semi retired and just running around fixen tractors when the temp . is above my age.

Nice ride.
I have a cousin that drives one of the blue trucks.
Said the company figured out the autos get 1/2 mpg more, also said the jakes come on automatically when descending.

Nice looking BIG truck. I took my Pete back to the hospital to get a block heater put in at Saybrook. Randy has a Fitzgerald glider kit in there. A 500 Detroit, sleeper, 8" stacks, etc. You can get a 10, 13, or 18 speed and other goodies but no emissions. That would be the way I would go for here in IL.

Let's see---your "funny" A horse with no name by America made me think about a line from your new trucks song by Tennessee Ernie Ford---I owe my soul to the company store....
