Worn Front Idler on Crawler Tractor

I've got a Cat Model Twenty Two that has one of the front idlers with more wear than the other. The other looks just fine. My question is this. Would turning to one side a lot more than the other cause this wear to happen that much faster? Seems like a given thing, but....could excessive slack or tightness in the track(chain)cause this to happen?

Thanks

I think both could be factors. Turning can pick up soil (usually on both tracks) and cause wear that is on the same edge of the idler flange. Poor idler axle bearing lubrication, or misalignment can contribute as well. Jim

Can't say on the wear ? But we had a JD440 and had the front idlers welded up because of wear. Might be an option for yours if it is too bad and I bet hard to find replacements.

An old Cat like that has likely spent a lot of its life disking. Always making left turns. The right side has travelled a lot further. Not unusual to find the right side more worn.

In my teen years I worked for a vary large construction company and during the off season my time was spent in the huge shop complex working on the equipment and spent many days welding up idlers rollers and installing sprocket rings or welding in sprocket cups. All by hand and all by stick , one pass all the way around with a soft rod and the next pass was a hard face then back to soft till you had it built up , then it was off to one of the lathes to be turned down to spec.'s and checked with the proper gauge . Also welded on lots of grouser stock on wore down track pads and by the time that pad was wore down to the weld the pad was plum wore out .
