Didn't get the beans done

Spent a good while hunting up a new sickle head and eventually ended up getting the old one welded. My usual guy, did a great job. 400 feet into the first row it broke in a different place. I cannot see what the problem is. If the weather warms like it is supposed to do and/or it rains then I am pretty much done.

Some years are like that.

Makes a person appreciate the good ones.....

Think you have 3 acres left, I've done that much in May already. The beans crack like crazy, and they have less oil, but here anyhow the elevators buy them anyhow.

You have time. Not ideal, but you have time.

What shape are the sickle guards in? It cuts like a scissors, it needs a sharp sickle -and- a sharp edge on the guard as well. Often times the guards get overlooked and have rounded edges, works in dry stems but messes you up in tougher situations. Also the driver. Forget if you have a wobble box or a pitman, anyhow that can get loose. Might spin ok by hand with no load, but it will wiggle under a real load. And then, assume you have a floating sickle, are the anchors on the sickle back good and solid, sometimes a anchor breaks, the sickle hangers there nice, but slide it on the dirt and that section deforms or allows the whole back to rock side to side opposite of the sickle.....

I got the corn done this afternoon. As late as 3:30 I wouldn't have bet ten cents that I'd get done, but I pulled it off somehow and got everything home before dark. I backed the last two loads in the barn,I'll just grind it right out of the wagons. It was dark before I got chores done. I'm starting to thaw out and feel cold,so I'm headed for a hot shower and hopefully some sleep.

You'll get'er done Dave. I'm living proof that it can happen.

Dave,
I wonder if something else is broken? I had a wobble box come loose on two different heads before and they kind of hammer things apart. Another one some mounts for the cutter bar broke and it was moving back and forth some. Could just be tough conditions and guards/knives that are getting dull. If you let the head head run and get out to look at it is it running smoothly?

I'm happy for you Randy! I wish it could have gone differently here but every time I buy something on those d*** Sheridan auctions it turns out to be a beat up piece of junk patched together so it will work about 10 rounds and then go all to heck.

You got me thinking maybe I need to look underneath. Got no HHC on this except my right thumb. Maybe I let her drag a little low and broke something? I need some serious sack time, but then maybe I need to have a look see. Cherry on the cake here....winter storm warning, 3-6". FINE, sez I...I will just get to use the new snow blower. Nope...freezing rain mixes in early and then it all melts before I get out there.

My guy at CIH suggested that. I am going to give it a serious look when I can. Tomorrow if the freezing rain is not too bad. Has to be something, right?!

As Josh said don't overlook the wobble box. Sometimes when they start to go they get violent with the knife and wreck things. With the knife unhooked turn the head un till the box is about mid stroke. Then grab the part that the knife attaches to a d try to shake it back and forth. If you can move it over a small amount it has problems

I was thinking about you while I was picking. I thought sure you'd be done and back home with your feet up before I got done.
