Charging a 6 volt battery

I let a 6 volt battery water get below the plates. I added distilled water. I don't know if I damaged the battery or not. When charging would a slow 3 volt charge be better than a 6 v. I have a 1 volt also. Stan

Or are you talking 1 amp or 3amp ?

It may come back to life. Put it on 3 amps and keep an eye on it. May even take several days. Do you have a hydrometer ? Good way to keep an eye on the charging of it.

Hello 37chief,

You did not say what is the battery voltage now. Fully charged should be 6.3 volts at 80 degrres F.
Charging amps is more of a concern. Charge it as slow as you can, this way all the cells will come up evenly,

Guido.

I boiled a motorcycle battery completely dry once many years ago, I filled it with water and it was OK! I don't remember for how long, but it lasted awhile.

You cannot charge a 6 volt battery with a 3 volt charger. Will need a 6 volt charger which will provide somewhat more than the 6+volts that the battery will carry when fully charged.

I have seen that happen and the battery be OK. Just charge it, even if it did damage it you have nothing to lose by trying to charge it and see what happens.

Here is what battery university has to say about charging.

The correct setting of the charge voltage limit is critical and ranges from 2.30V to 2.45V per cell.

Go to college, read the entire article.

Years ago I had a goldwing. The computer that would drain battery in about 5 days. So I would disconnect battery. I also charged it by putting 60v to charger and put charger on a timer. 1-2 hours at a time, limit current to 2 amps, and then pulled a hydrometer test so I didn't over charge because I was using a manual charger.

I have had discharged batteries and when I hooked up the charger it pegged! So if it was a 12 volt battery, I switched the charger to 6 volts. If it was a 6volt battery I hooked a test light in series with the charger witch would drop the voltage and amperage across the battery. I would check after a time and return the charger to proper voltage, if it still pegged I would leave the test light in series maybe overnight. I am not an expert but my thought is to charge the battery as slow as you can. just my 2 cents worth. joe
