I have a 1962 1010 John Deere that needs a head and I wish to sell it. What is the best way to sell this unit?

You can sell it "as is", but you take a heckuva beating on the price. Providing it would run with a good head, I'd check tractor wrecking yards for one, and try to get it going.

There is always an advantage to selling a running tractor over a non-running tractor. Unless you have the Holy Grail of parts units in your possession which you do not have with a 1010.

I would love to rebuild it. My grandfather bought it one month after I was born, but I need to get it gone.

Is it gas? If it helps,I believe a model 40 combine uses the same head. That would broaden your search. Replace it then try to sell it as a running tractor.

I have not done any checking so this is a guess. That engine is the same as the 40 combine with a 115" engine. The 45 combine and 2010 tractors used the 145 " engine and later 45 combine engine was a 165" version. I know all complete engines are interchangeable and the deck plate to make the different sizes is interchangeable on all blocks for use with different sized pistons to get the different size CUin. So I would think the heads are all interchangeable as well. My John Deere mechanic at the dealer also farmed and he had a 1010 that he put a 45 combine engine in. I did not at the time realize there was anything except the 145 engine so I do not know if he used the 145 or 165 engine. It was his main plowing tractor with 3-14" in heavy soil. But from the power he said it had I am thinking the 165 engine. So for the head it would just depend on it seating to the deck plate.
