Hello. My grandpap had this tractor, but there is something different about it. I've tried to upload a photo (I hope it works). In the picture, slightly above center (to left of top of fender), is a shiny handle-what is this handle for? Does it make the tractor go slower? Or is it for something else? If anyone has any ideas as to what this might be, I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I'm NOT a "Cub" guy, but my GUESS would be an aftermarket disconnect clutch to give a sort of "live PTO" to the tractor, or possibly some type of slowdown gear reduction.

Does the tractor run so you can try it it either position of the lever and see what it does?

Cub version of Howard Rotivator gear reduction unit. Stop the tractor before switching. My brothers has 2 of them and can go
RREEAALL slow. A very nice addition that allows the cub to have 6 speed choices. Jim

Very interesting, I never saw one before. It must slow down that side and the differential
functions and slows down the the other side. I would think it would contribute to differential wear
if this is what is going on.

That is what is going on, but no issues have been reported from use. Driving in a curve pulling a drag or other tillage doesn't cause differential failure. Lack of lubrication does. Jim

Howard CD6 Despeder, to slow the ground speed down when using the Howard Rotavator. If you decide to remove it and sell it, do not forget the seal plate that is between the final drive and the Despeeder. They frequently get left on the tractor and the Despeeder is useless without it. Of course you also need the brake extension and the drawbar extensions as well.

I forgot to mention, those despeeders are great when you need to mow real thick heavy stuff that is normally to much for your belly mower. One word of caution, which you will also find in the manual. They are only to be used to slow speed, not for increasing pull. There are no new parts available for them, so if you break something you are up that well known creek without a paddle.

What you say about driving in a curve is true of course, but the difference in speed would not be so great as if it was in that reduction unit I don't think. However I take your work that it doesn't seem to be a problem.
