6 volt electric fuel pump

I'm having a terrible time getting a correct mechanical fuel pump for my 35 Chevy 1 1/2 ton. The later ones bolt up and work but not for long. I think the throw on the cam is too long and stresses the diaphragm too much. They also have too long of a flange and cause a pretty good oil leak.

I've decided to put an electric fuel pump in it. It is six volt. Does anyone have a part number for a good one I could give Napa? I'd rather avoid diaphragm pumps if I could and need it to be low volume. I hesitate to go electric, but I did buy a high quality rotary one for the chore pickup and it has been trouble free for many years. It wasn't cheap but it has been well worth its money. That's what I am looking for.

I put one of these on my stock/restored 33 chevy coupe and ran the fuel line through the mech pump so it looks like stock pump is still used.

There used to be a major fuel pump rebuilder in Witchita Kan. The owner of a military vehicle I restored found one there. This was for a ww2 Ford GPW Burma Jeep with a Ford flathead six. The previous owner had put a 6v electric pump on it to replace the original mechanical. We wanted an original pump but he couldn't find one till he came up with this place in Wichita. I tried to call him to get a name for the place but he isn't answering. Maybe the place can be Googled if it is still there.

mechanical pump info: used my 1952 chev dealers parts book and found original pump is AC-421, used on 35-36 chev only. googled this number and several hits on e bay. looks like also used on buick 36-38 and 36-37 diamond t truck. possibly others hope this info helps you leroy

I have a facet pump on my jeep (on page 3 or 4, My Daily Driver)running through the existing pump I use it to prime the existing pump on occasion. Jim

On a Google search I came up with Arthur Gould Rebuilders. On the website they claim to rebuild fuel and water pumps for vehicles from 1927 to 1970. They have some rebuilts on stock. I don't know how to post a link with this tablet. Just Google Arthur Gould Rebuilders.

I had the same problem with a 49 chevy. It turns out the cam lobe was worn and when a new fuel pump developed just a little play in the fuel pump action the arm did not have enough travel to pump enough fuel

If the throw on the cam is too long you ought to be able to fix that by making the fuel pump gasket thicker. Guess work or real measurement needed.

Old fuel pump parts do not withstand the ethanol in today's gas. There are rebuilders that can do a quality job on about any pump. I had one rebuilt for a 1941 Caterpillar R4. Here is a link to one. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of HEMMINGS MOTOR NEWS, all these suppliers and service people advertise in Hemmings. I think TSC usually has it in the rack if your local supermarket doesn't.
