Just saw that he passed away. The space program was going strong by the time I was born but I sure knew who he was.

He was a real hero when I was a kid. It's too bad that he turned in to such a political hack and will be remembered for that by a few generations.

I remember him saying that he was the first officer that was better than the enlisted men............He said that he put his pants on BOTH LEGS AT ONCE while in orbit. The old saying was "They put their pants on just like the enlisted, one leg at a time".

I live just outside newconcord ohio where he was born and raised. His childhood home is now like a museum.they named the high school after him also. And just recently they renamed the Columbus Ohio airport after him. And I am Guy from newconcord sent eighty thousand tons of Asphalt to the airport this past summer from the Asphalt plant in work at on the opposite side of Columbus. The Asphalt was for an upgraded runway.

I remember quite well being on the task force of many Navy ships on the recovery team to pick up his capsule in the Atlantic. We had a full size mock-up of the capsule on our Destroyer and practiced insistently to pick it up. We were somewhere out in the middle of the Atlantic, going around in circles, waiting for many days for the shot to go off. When he finally did go in orbit and came back down, another Destroyer picked him up. We never saw it.

Rip.

Mom said she didn't get much attention from the nurses, they were watching the black and white tv in the waiting room covering him more than they were watching her as I was being born. The nurses wanted her to name me John Glen.

Absolutely! He was from a nnalert party which actually stood for something. Not this party of apologists we have today which seem to have the main goals of hating this country and trying to get something for nothing.

I agree rrlund.

Never thought much of his politics but he was in the right place at the right time.

I am from Ohio and he was no Hero to me,, He cast the deciding vote for the Harsh Clean air act which a few weeks latter killed over 5,000 coal mine jobs in my area,, after that vote all of his delinquent campaign debts "disappeared"...he was bought off...Sure his ride around the world was a great thing,,but his short political ride was not so good...

Well the likes of you happens numerous times every day......Grin. Space travel is a one time (sorta) event. They're only human. Was your mom glued to the TV too? Another grin.
