Plastic Gas Tank Followup

Posted last week about frozen bolts in a Honda plastic gas tank...

Let them soak all weekend with penetrating oil, tried again this morning, no luck.

Talked to the owner, he said just leave it as it is, didn't want to chance ruining the tank.

The problem was the fuel valve would not shut off, no way to run the carb empty when stored. So, probably next deer season, it will be back for another carb cleaning!

Oh well...

Thanks everyone for your input!

I thought of doing that, but the way it's made you would have to take the seat off to get to the valve.

He's not the type that would do that, too many other people use it also.

try putting a little heat on them with a soldering gun, just hold the tip on the bolt for a bit, you can control the heat well enough to not melt the plastic

That valve is a three postion unit. Run, off, and reserve. You may not be putting it in off.

My 400 foreman is a 98 and the only time the gas gets shut off is when it's being trailered, and that's been a few years. Almost 6000 miles and never had a fuel problem, never cleaned the carburetor! Remember the old fuel caps that said "buy clean fuel, keep it clean"

Problem there Russ is that I know people with 4 wheelers that let em sit 6 months or more at a time. BIL is one. His sets from the end of deer season till about a month before it opens. IF you use it say 9-10 months a year gas doesn't start to go bad. Wife's boss also is an outdoor power equipment sales and repair place for 2 major brands. His mechanics spend a lot of time cleaning carbs from mowers in the spring that have sat for the last 9 months and snow blowers in the fall that have sat for the last 6 months to over a full year. That's also why they sell non-oxygenated gas too.

before you park it run it out of fuel and the carb will be dry or add a Quart of truefuel after the tank is empty

When the valve on my Polaris stopped sealing, I just added a cheap plastic shutoff right next to it. It's been working great for 5 or 6 years.

There is no way to drain the fuel system, or to siphon out most of the gas and then run the engine to use up the last of the remaining fuel? Both worked on motorcycles and snowmobiles.
