border crossing

To the best of my knowledge (small) you can get some forms from the Border folks, fill them out - et voila ! Probly no fees (maybe for the forms). Google is your friend. HTH

Last one I brought over (last year) just a bill of sale, filled out a form when coming back across. This was a tractor made in the USA, if yours wasn't it will probably be more complicated. Used expired passport and driver's license to get across.
 
Clean for sure. Better make sure there isn't any mud on the truck, trailer or tractor. Take plenty of Loonies and Toonies to the car wash and get it all clean prior to border crossing or it likely won't be pretty for you.
 
Given that it is an antique with likely no pollution controls, the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) may have an opinion on whether you can take it into the States.

About 14 years ago I went up to Alberta to pick up my first Canuck tractor. I had heard that it must be clean.....on the way up I saw another tractor by the side of the road, so on the way back I pulled in to take a look and immediately started to spin my tires. I just floored it and kept going...made a nice mess! About 5 miles from the border I decided I better stop and see how much mud was on the truck and trailer. I spent close to an hour with a putty knife, probably better than 500# I scraped off. Got to the border will still a lot on where I couldn't reach and they never even said a word about it. :eek:
 
When we crossed the border both ways with combines we made sure there was no dirt anywhere and we never were hassled. A little wheat chaff or straw didn't seem to trigger any response from them. One bit of advice is to make sure the serial number is clean and visible and it wouldn't hurt to have the serial number on the bill of sale just in case. It wouldn't hurt to become familiar with the placement of the serial number so you can point it out if he requests it. Same goes for the trailer. If it is home made, stamp some kind of a serial number somewhere just in case the officer is picky. Over a period of about five years the only time we had trouble was the time the boss almost got hauled off to jail for getting into a heated argument with the border officer over self brokering. The boss had the flu and wasn't in the best mood!
 
Back home you went down Old Kiln road took you all of 2 seconds. Or I would drive thru a closed port of entry late at night. Times have changed. But doing this today will earn you three squares a day and a jumpsuit.
 
Hi best thing to do is phone the port where you will cross and ask all the questions, They will either tell you or put you in touch with the answers you need. I ship parts into Canada from the U.S at the Dunseith ND port of entry, It's a smaller port. My buddy does his down at Emerson which is a major crossing,as it's closer to him or another smaller crossing depending where he's been. There is considerable differences at all 3 places. We both find the smaller ports kinda look at the papers on some stuff and just can't be bothered and waive you on. The bigger one is a royal pain and every i must be dotted and T crossed.

Wrong advice on here from well meaning guys could cost you money and a change of jumpsuit every day, Just go ask them in authority that know and will deal with it when you get there.
I do know someones government doesn't really want us bringing motorized equipment from the U.S to Canada, The paper work and 72 hours export notice is a royal pain if you buy from private sellers, and some U.S dealers won't do the paper work either now due to the hassle. If things aren't right you can be denied import into canada as well if they don't like your attitude at the crossing! I'm guessing that could easily work the other way to, some of your border guys aren't that friendly in some ports.
