Great auction idea

I was thinking of going to the Hwy 64 Auction tomorrow in IA. I went on their website to check pics. They usually have a large amount of small farm items and a lot of farm machinery. On their website that have video of the whole sale lot taken this afternoon with a drone. They go slow enough that you can see what is on each pallet of parts fairly well and you get a great view of the rest of what is there as well. I wish every sale would do this. They go down each row and give you a nice pics. I am now planning on staying home as there appears very little that interests me. Tom

Yes but it is a 100 mile drive for me so it would be nice to see several things that interest me before going that far. I have a shop project I would like to get done before cold gets here.If I drive down and see nothing it at least half a day wasted. Tom

that sounds like a great idea to me.
i too have went to a sale to find out what was interested in was junk.

I suspect that would be the case with most auctions these days. The good stuff is sold on craigslist or eBay, the junk goes to the auction.

I have been to their Auction once in the last five years. That was this summer. There was a concrete contractor's equipment being sold by a local bank. I did get a Bobcat demolition hammer for about half price. Most of the other stuff brought what it was worth. My main issue is I do not trust Powers very much. I have seen too many "deals" he was involved in.

Busy tomorrow and did not even think about them having their sale.

I share your dislike for Powers as they are as crooked as they come. I have bought a few cheaper items that were consigned. Last spring we got a cheap 3020 gas for parts and I often buy some small stuff like weights or grain bin parts. Tom

(quoted from post at 19:13:00 12/02/16) Some of the best bargains I have gotten at auctions were items not listed, and if a bargain is sold you can't buy it unless you are there.

Add in another bidder and it may not be such a bargain!

I go to auctions to buy. If nothing is on the bill that is of interest then I don't go. The garbage on the wagons I seldom look at when I'm at an auction as most of it is just that. My time is worth more than setting at an action trying to "win" a "bargain". I've never bought a bargain in my life. I've purchased items and gotten good prices thought. Just how much is a bargain? Heck what does a bargain look like? What's the average going price of a bargain?

I agree, the best things I have bought I went to the auction not even knowing about, the best being a semi rare hit and miss engine for 185 bucks and when I went online asking about info on it I had guys offering me up to 2 grand for it as it Sat, stuck and rusted up, we ended up restoring it. Had it been listed I'm sure someone would have been there who knew it's worth.

Trouble is,on some sales, that would let you know how rough the stuff is. I went to a sale one time for a self unloading forage box. It sat out in the weeds all rotted out. I told the auctioneer that I wished he'd have said it was rough on the sale bill. He said "Would you have come if I did?".

LOL I've left auctions because of that!

On another note. I know people, my wife, one of my kids, a brother in law, couple of friends, a few others who live for the "treasure hunt". Nothing at all wrong with that. They enjoy it so an auction where don't buy anything is still enjoyable to them. To me it's a waste of time unless there is a specific item I'm interested in. I determine what I'm willing to spend. Basically I look at current market for that item. Then I discount at least 10% for the time and trouble of going. I also discount for buyer fees. Then I never ever exceed the max I'm willing to pay! I gotten some stuff pretty cheap that way and I've come home empty handed. I normally take cash only unless it's a big ticket item. Couple of times I was disappointed that I didn't bring my checkbook with when something else I would have liked to have purchased went cheap.
