WHere to find!

This is not a flame I am trying to be realistic. Many of us gave you an opinion not to put a turbo on it. Putting a turbo on it that includes an obsolete device is also a bad idea on top of a bad idea. There is no money in this project, and less if you put a turbo on it. If it is running, clean it up fix small things, paint it, and sell it. If it is a project you need, start with a much simpler running gas tractor that doesn't take specialty tools, high technical skills, and 10 years of applied experience to accomplish. We cannot give you what you need in the above categories. We do know which of us are giving solid advice, but we cat't help you decide which of us to believe. Choosing to hear that which you want to hear is not listening. Jim

I think from reading your post you bought a 1065 model JD 4020 diesel. While this is a good price it was not a steal. The JD 4020s your seeing sell for $10-15K are 1970-72 side console JD 4020s. I have bought two JD 4020 diesels in the last year. Both where under $5000. So if yours is real clean with everything working you MIGHT be able to make a little on reselling it.

Your wanting to put a turbo on it would be fine IF you where planning to keep it. Since you say your wanting to sell it then there are several reasons NOT to do it. The biggest is the cost to do what your wanting to do. A complete M&W turbo kit can easily run around a $1000. They are a lot of guys that want one for THEIR current tractor. This now ties into the second part of this. These same fellows would NOT be interested in paying a premium for your tractor with it already on it. They would be like me and think that the tractor had the snot pulled out of it with the turbo on it. I personally would give more for your tractor without the turbo than with what I would with your tractor having one on it. So from a money making view it does not make sense to install one. Now if your going to keep the tractor and want a turbo then go for it. You can find Turbo setups out there. They will not usually sell cheap.

this is just some information ... i had a 7020 4x4 many years ago and it had a turbo on it from factory, 404 cid i believe it was. the 4020 and the 7020 had the same engine , just the 7020 was turboed for extra h. p. i do not know if both engines used the same pistons , but i would think the turboed engine would have different pistons. the 4020 was around 85 H.P. while the 7020 was close to 130 H.P.with the same engine. also the G.M. 6.5 diesel was both... turboed or non turboed.
i had the turboed one.

If you WANT an M&W turbo on your 4020 and have the MONEY, time, and will to do it, GO FOR IT!

You'll have NO problems with it unless you have some custom mods done to the IP that REALLY cranks up the fuel rate and intend to pull the snot out of it all day long.

The naysayers are way out of bounds here.

That being said, I have a 4020 with an M&W turbo I got at an estate sale in 1983, and it STILL isn't all tore up and doesn't have a cracked block (that's just SILLY).

The fellow that previously owned it was a "BTO" of his era, and farmed half the countryside with that tractor and another turbo 4020.

It was rode hard and put away wet (which you can tell to this day by looking at it) but they never were able to "kill" it.

So, unless you intend to get really out of hand with a high fuel rate and overloading it, don't give adding a turbo a second "bad" thought, IMHO.

All that being said, I have 2 extra M&W 4020 turbo setups, which I am NOT planning to liquidate, at this time.

Tractor prices in your area must be lower. Latte 70 72 4020s are going for 10 to 25 thousand wherever i look. There was a restored 4020 that brought 55k at an auction.

I bet it wasn't a 1965 and they probably spent 50K restoring it.
