Case 310 Cat?? Thoughts?

Saw a Case 310 Cat forsale locally, 6 way blade, winch, 4 post/sunshade. Looks to be in pretty decent condition. Say that it is a Diesel. They want $3000 for it. Isn't that pretty cheap for a nice little cat?

The real decision to determine a value on a crawler is a focus on the undercarrage and track. Loose track, worn ramp sprocket teeth, and loose bogie wheels are major. Extending this upward is the track clutches and brakes. Other things can be fixable, the above is a deal breaker. Jim

A case 310 is a very nice crawler. A diesel should have the 188 that was in the 530/630 and is a good engine. If the undercarriage is good that is a good price. I'm in the process of a total rebuild on one. The rollers can be had for a little over $100.00 each. I can get front idlers if needed used. Chains are about $700.00 each I think. They opperate a little different from other brands as there are no steering clutches, instead they use a differential and steering brakes. This makes them push a little better when turning as I understand it.

Here is a picture of it. 99% sure I am going to buy it in the morning. Lot of other people going to look at it thought . . . . :/

That's good to know that you can still get parts for them. Seems like Case's struggled with brakes (from what little I know about them) so I am going to check it over very well, but, I think it is in good shape. Owner seems to be knowledgeable and takes good care of stuff. Replaced it with a newer D4 he said.

Ya I know it.... I am a little nervous as I have never looked a Cat over that well, but, I will just go slow and use some common sense! ;)

These brakes are not the dry disc brakes that case used in farm tractors, they are oil bath band brakes and are known to be very reliable and work well. They are also still available and not too expensive and are fairly easy to replace once you get the rear cover off.

Looks like a winch on the back too! If it runs and moves at all that is an excellent buy! Wish it was by me. I'll have twice that in an older gas model when I'm done.

Bryce, had one just like it. sold it for $4500.00 a couple of years ago to a landscaper. He said that it was small enough to get into backyards to do work. Looks good from here and I'm a lot closer than Jon.

drain a little oil out of the final drives, the plug is on the bottom, lots of metal rebuild is on the horizon. If the owner will allow take the rear cover (large square) off the back of the transmission, the brake shoes have brass in them so you may see some in the oil of brakes are getting worn. You can also check condition of ring gear. You will most likely double the price of the machine if it has internal issues. But they are great machines, do not underestimate what they can do.

When it comes to small dozers in that age bracket, you have two choices. Case or Oliver. Either are worth whatever it costs to rebuild them. If the motor runs good and the undercarriage is halfway decent, it is probably worth the price. I believe Zimmerman's has been advertising he is getting into supplying parts for the 310 Case crawlers now in addition to Oliver.

Nice looking little Case [b:0bf811f8a9]CRAWLER[/b:0bf811f8a9] you posted. I wanna see this Case Cat you started to tell us about though!

Here that would be worth 5K cause everyone up here with 10 acres of ground things they need a crawler.

It's a Case. Many regions use "Cat" generically for any bulldozer, like Kleenex for facial tissue or Band-aid for adhesive bandages. The 310 is a nice unit for its size and age, though, as noted, if it needs undercarriage work it won't take long to double or triple the purchase price, which could quickly make it go from a good deal to a money pit.

What areas? I've lived in NJ, MN, KS, TX and KY. I heard crawlers called dozers in all those places even if they didn't have a blade. Never heard any described as a BRAND Cat as in the OP's Case Cat or IH, JD, Oliver or Komatsu Cat.

Well, wherever Bryce is from for starters, LOL! Here's another reference from an Oregon logging page. I agree that "dozer" or "crawler" are the more commonly used generic terms, but "Cat" is certainly prevalent in some places.

Go to crawlerheavendotcom for info on how to measure track wear, pins, bushings, etc. UC is the money pit.

Komatsu Cat. That brought back a memory. I work road construction in the Minneapolis, St Paul area. Years ago the company brought a
Komatsu dozer. The parts guys would laugh and tell the story about the foreman who had it on his jobs. He would always call in for parts for it
and start out by saying " YA I gots this Komatsu Cat" . Funny, that was back in the 80s.
