I wonder if they ever did any tests with the roller/packer hooked behind the drill to see if that would get a better stand ?
 
One spring Pop decided he would have the straightest garden rows ever. He hitched up that old grain drill and carefully went over the garden, I think two or three times, made perfect straight north-south rows. Had the prettiest stand of oats in that garden he'd ever seen.
 
Ya it does look in a different order than today lol. Great picture though thank you for sharing!

My Dad says that (roller packer thing) was to bust up the clods so to speak -- but I agree maybe should have had something like it on behind--Roy

ooks to me they were breaking sod. Look at the soil slabbing at the molboards. They may have been breaking some native sod or may be some grass hay fields. If that's the case the seed bed is pretty good for the equipment being used.
