Water will help

Woke up at 3:30 this morning with the water well cycling every 15 minutes long story short, isolated the well and the pressure tank pressure still dropped. pulled the top off the well and I could hear a gurgling noise. I'm thinking the main pipe sprung a leak. Pump is 500 feet down. Don't think I should hear anything in the well unless the pump is running. Thinking I'll have to have somebody pull it. suggestions.

I think you've got it- hole in the pipe. Bad check valve would allow leak back below the water surface, so no sound. Can't really think of any other possibilities.

You could add a check valve at the pressure tank until you can get it fixed, that should stop the short cycling, but it would probably put air in your pressure tank.

My son in law just had the same issue, 300' drilled well. They pulled it all and found the last three sections of pipe had deteriorated and the last piece had split for about three feet along the seam. They put a new pump in while it was all pulled. THe well system is about 15 years old.

Would guess a bad pipe or bad foot (check) valve.

I would line up a well guy, and also figure out how old the pump is, if it's getting old/ weak this would be the time to replace it as well if needed, as long as it's up on the surface...... Then you are good for another 20 years and don't have to worry about it.

Thanks for the replies. it's nerve-racking to wake up with something like that going on knowing you have guest on the way. Not going to be cheap.

Valve or pipe leaking. Had to do mine a couple of weeks ago. Lucky I was home and heard it short cycle really bad. The back pivot on the little flap valve had broken off. Biggest problem is it is a 3 inch well and not a 4 inch. When I had it worked on 20 years ago they had stopped making 3 subs. NOW they don't make 3 inch footvalves anymore. Lucky for me they now make 3 inch subs again to the tune of 250 plussssss! Only a 60 foot well and he put in a new tank also. Whole deal was $1800.oo. Best thing now is I have water flow and pressure out the WAZOOOO!! It is only going to get worse so pucker up and move them out.

Hi, my pump did the same. I called the pump guy , he pulled everything and found a hole rusted thru thread at a coupling. I had him replace pipe with heavy wall pvc with SS couplings also a new brass check valve and brass pitless adapter. The well casing was sticking above ground 2 ft. which is not code so he had to cut it down to 6 " protrusion and weld an adapter on to fit cap. Total 900 bucks. Ed Will Oliver BC wine capital

That's strange to have to cut off a casing! I would think it would invite surface water contamination if there were ever a flood, and they are getting more common all the time. Both of our wells are flows (artesian) and the one at the house sticks up a good 3 feet and the one at the cabin I extended to about 3 ft so I could control the overflow. The one at the house has some kind of a plug in it above the pitless, I'm not sure if I would be able to change that pump myself.

That's what I would do. Either the check valve fixes the problem (so you need to have it pulled and install a new foot valve but you don't have to rush too much). Or it [i:654c4848f0]doesn't[/i:654c4848f0] fix the problem, and you have to have it pulled (sooner) to fix a hole in the pipe.

Just had ours done 2 weeks ago- hole in the plastic pipe, and the pump was weak...over 25 years old. New pump, motor, some minor parts, was $1100. Good for a few decades again.

My brother didn't sign up for the rural water system that came through years ago; he just kept on using the well. Originally it was okay, only $30 a month; now it is over $100 a month for just a family of two. He was money ahead keeping the 58ft. well, even with a little maintenance.
