Odd Break On The Massey

Went to use the old Super 90 Massey today and found the hyd-transmission dipstick missing. Tried sticking a piece of wire down the hole to see how high the oil was and could not. I found the stick had actually broken off about half inch down from the top and was still stuck in the hole. I got it out by removing the top access cover and pushing the broken piece up and out. I took my best guess and welded a stub of a spike onto the top of the dipstick. Slid a chunk of rubber up over the stick to make a sort of seal and it seems good to go. Crude and I don't really know for sure if I got the level right. I guess the only way is to drain and refill the hyd-trans oil with the recommended amount and then take a reading on the dipstick to see how close I got it.

(quoted from post at 21:27:53 10/18/16) That's a very common dip stick, fits many models, readily available.

But your repair is probably sufficient, not that critical.

Interesting to see that reproductions are available. The top part is different from the original but as long as the length is right that is the main thing.

If you have been checking the oil level regular and it has been OK it is probably OK now unless you
have a new leak that is causing you to be checking, and the level where it is is the proper level.

That is the problem here, it has a leak in one of the front end loader bucket cylinders. Bad enough that I put a pail under it when parked in the shed. So it requires regular fill ups through the year. I had the cylinder repaired years ago but guess the shaft is bad enough that a seal won't last long.
