Gorgeous country!I spent my childhood at Eldorado,Got family at Cottonwood Falls.Dad lived at Bazzar.Been through Cassody many times.Grandfather lived at Newton just before he died. The road between Newton and Cassody is called First Street Road by locals. THe area around Eden Mennonite/Burns is where dad was raised. He is buried one mile west at Ebonezer Methodist. I Would move back in a heartbeat if I ever got the oportunity. Thanks for the memories

I love the Flint Hills area of Kansas....Here are 3 pictures from Bazaar.....Those creek bottom beans at the
edge of Bazaar will make 60 or more bu per acre...For the first time ever on Friday I was in Bazaar and Matfield Green..

I often use 1st street east out of Newton for wide loads....I know the back roads all the way to MO..
I've been by the Eden Mennonite church and that cemetery many times..

On Friday while taking pictures of Cassoday an older man headed west on 1st street in a U-haul towing a
car...I followed him to Newton...He stayed at the same motel as me and told me that he was moving from
Cleveland to Tuscon...He was driving 500 miles per day and was half done..His GPS sent him thru Cassoday..

I wish everyone could see those pictures as I know so many people who think Kansas is completely flat and treeless. I grew up in Decatur County but left there for Hays in 1974, moved to Denver in 1979, and to Montana at the end of 1981. I'd love to move back to Kansas but I have too many tractors and other machinery.

I glanced at the first picture and thought that could pass for the elevator in my home town. I took a second look and realized it IS the elevator from my home town!

Gonna have find new ways back to Tx when leave Mo but usually do it on way there. Have found and drove on parts of old 54 and 169 and some of 71.

WOW! What great pics. That is my kind of sightseeing. And none of that would be visible from an Interstate at 70mph.

Wow great pictures. You did a great job and I'm sure it took you a while to get all these...Thanks for sharing.

You definitely did not take a direct route! You were within 2 miles of me while in Antelope. That elevator is owned by a local farmer and used for his feedlot.

You take the best road trips. I live in Michigan now. I grew up in Lyndon, Ks. I haven't heard anyone mention Skiddy in 40 years. In 1973 the paving contractor my dad hauled asphalt for had a batch plant at the Bazaar cattle pens on the turnpike. He had radiator problems on his dump truck. We took the repaired radiator back and I helped him install it. When we were done he went back to work and I drove the pickup home. 70 miles home, 14 years old with a restricted license. I thought I was a big shot, although highway 50 was narrow and scary east of Emporia. Ron

I used to deliver corn from nebr.to the Flint Hills feedlot -- is it still there? Then went to Joplin Mo to get dical to bring back to Iowa

it is a shame if not a crime so many small towns USA have pretty much dried up and blown away.
small town just west of me was once bigger than Chicago Il.
about all that's left is a bar, 2 churches,co-op,fire station and a few houses.

Your pictures show a lot of history. It is terrible that the 80's annilated the farming communities. I am not sure more towns can survive these times and prices. We don't need more actors for president. Farmers can't get organized so they do not get paid wholesale for raw products and have to buy retail. BOTs cause problems but some of them by be thinned out this year.

Thank you for the excellent photos and labeling them. Very much appreciated.

1206SWMO,

Sad that so many of our small towns are dead or dying.

A lot of fantastic photos - thanks for posting! Would love to explore areas like that with my camera in hand.

I especially liked:
5. The old bank at Parkersville
6. The old, rusty Rumely
8 & 9. Old house and church at Skiddy.
19 & 20. Old Drinkwater & Schriver mill
22. Old store at Clements with the ornate trim on the front (LOVE IT!)
26. The smallest old 1-room schoolhouse.

Just a slight correction to the caption for picture #17. It more correctly should say "THE church in Aulne"--there's only one. I recognized several of those pictures. Thanks for sharing some of my part of the country!

1206SWMO.
The Flint Hills are truly amazing. When you were in Alta Vista you were about 20 miles south of where I live. You cannot see these kind of sites traveling the Interstate system.
Thanks for taking the time to share these wonderful pictures.
