Well I got to run my picker some today the neighbor left me some corn in his field to pick the picker worked real well it plugged up a few times in the snapping rolls but I think the stalks were wet as it was in the same place each time and I couldn't get the adjust freed up for the drive shaft to run straight so il have to take it off this winter and get it freed up.

If I get off the row a little my #7 will plug up. I have to fight it constantly to keep it on the row picking 30" rows because it was made to pick wide rows and the left hand wheel runs on the row in narrow rows.

I might be way off with this because I was just a young kid when this happened but the neighbor and Pa had identical New Idea pickers and had same problems with them plugging at the snapping rolls. They determined that it was because they were to low to the ground and the stalks did not have room to get away. So they made some plates to remount the axles 4" down. Giving the picker 4" more ground clearance. That solved the problem. No more plugging. Does that make sense?

Another thought might be that modern corn is planted much heavier and closer together than it was back in those days. If you don't have a slow enough gear it may be that the picker just can't take it away fast enough.
