OT Food and stores

Question is why do stores always put items like bananas and grapes in so big a pack that one person cannot eat all of it before it spoils but then on tuna why so small cans it takes 2 or 3 cans for a meal? Other items are same way either too big to use before spoiling or else you have to use 2 packs to have enough? Some gravy mixes for the amount of potatoes that I fix at a time for mashed I would have to use 4 packs of gravy mix.

You used the items bananas and grapes. Just remember, if it is being sold by the pound you can take whatever you want. You don't have to take the whole bunch of bananas or the whole bag of grapes. Just break off one or two bananas or a nice bunch of grapes, put them in a plastic bag and take it to the checkout.
Stores always like to have grapes in those plastic bags or plastic boxes and expect that a customer will take the whole bag or box, (which most people do). Same with bananas, just break off what you want.
Any produce marked by the pound can be purchased by the pound. Many items, like potatoes are sold by the bag not by the pound, so you do have to take the whole bag.
Don't let the stores fool you into thinking you have to buy a whole bag or bunch if it's sold by the pound, take what you want.

Why are you making fun of me? Simple question. I hate having to open so many cans of the tuna to make a meal when they could pack it in 15 oz cans as easily as corn or beans and having all those cans to put in the garbage and that 15 oz can would cost them no more for packing than the 5 oz can and they could cut the price of the product a little. Same way with the midgit packs of the gravy mix. All those extra packege cost more to package that many than a few larger packs would cost so I am paying more to eat. And the bananas and grapes do you like throwing food away, don't you pay enough as it is? Now it is the same as when you change the oil in your car you get several quart cans, now how would you like paying twice for the oil as what you do in the quarts? Maby you like paying to put things in the garbage and having it hauled away but I do not.

Leroy- here is the gravy mixes I use. They come in 20 oz. plastic containers and you just mix the amount you want to make....eeeeasy-peeezy.

Nobody's laughing at you,we're just laughing with you. Sometimes you have to either laugh or cry.

Hello Leroy,

By your tuna by the pound, then refrigerate after opening. Put whats left in a container of your choice, cover the tuna with oil, close with a cap. It will last for months in the fridge....guaranteed!

You can have my share of tuna, but let me have the bananas, I eat 15 to 20 pounds of the darn things a week. They are cheap food and ready to eat, I like that.

It could be a psychological marketing ploy. The housewife might be more likely to buy four 4oz packages at $.90 each than one 16 oz package at $3.60 because $.90 is the price that sticks in the mind and appears cheaper in the long run. I don't know how many shoppers actually do the math. Bananas are cheaper for their size and need to be sold in larger packages to make a profit. It's all about the dollar. Just my $.02

Bananas are actually sold in a sealed bag with the weight printed on the bag, store does not have a scale. They come in preweighed so no you cannot break off some. Usually between 8 and 10 per bag and if I get 5 used in 5 days the rest have to be thrown out. grapes a bit better as they last longer. Just hate to be paying for and throwing away food like that. I do enough of that with buying something and then not getting it fixed before it is bad. And the stores only have the gravy mix in the little packets and tuna never seen it to buy bulk. I like to take a can and put in 1 egg per can with some bread crumbs and fry and makes a good sandwich to me. And like last batch 6 cans and 6 eggs and 8 nice sandwiches but that is a lot of tin to go in the garbage and I think if they had larger family sizes they could cut the price.

One a day is all I can do. and when they come in seeled plastic bag with 10 per bag that would be 10 days for me and I have not found a way to keep them that long.

Leroy- Amazon has a 24 pack of Starkist tuna in 12 oz. cans. $102.33 with free shipping. That works out to $4.26 per 12 oz. can.

Plu, you can buy the Tones gravy mix there as well.

My wife and myself sometimes also face the situation where food comes in quantities too big for us to use up, but my sister lives nearby and we can share with her and vice versa. It works well.

(quoted from post at 22:30:20 10/16/16) Not avaible here like that Only the 5 oz cans of shredded tuna.
You are obviously shopping in the wrong store.
Try a real grocery store.

I agree. The problem is with where you shop, not with package size.

Quit buying your bananas at Sam's Club, and quit buying your tuna at the gas station on the corner.

Buy your bananas at the gas station, and buy your tuna at Sam's Club.

Lost my wife a little over a year and a half ao after 37 years of mariage. No kids or brothers or sisters. Just me, myself and I.

I do not go to sams club ever and not at Walmart for groceries. And they are full size supermarkets that I go to. Smallest store that I go to is Aldi.
