buying shingles @ discount price, but installing in spring

Is it a good idea to buy discounted shingles in the fall, but not installing until spring? I can save up to $600 if i buy now-i can store in a covered patio during the winter time.

They store them for a long time at yards and big box stores 6 months won't hurt anything if kept cool. Putting them in a hot tin shed for a year is bad. Jim

go for it, dont get deals too often , not going to hurt a thing sitting.its the heat that kills them as they will stick together, if stacked too long with weight.

No problem...even in the heat as there is a plastic strip that keeps them from sticking together.

No problem with storeing shingles for a few months as long as they remain dry and out of direct sun. If the discount is for secounds don't do it. Manufacturing plants turn out alot of shingles before it's discovered they have one or more flaws.

Properly stored, there's no issue. Ideally you want them delivered on the same pallet on which they were shipped from the factory. Every time you handle the bundles you risk damaging the shingles.

Personally, I only want my shingles delivered to the roof.

Do your home work!! Why are they discounted??? Get enough so that if there discontinued your not up the creek.

By the way, metric-sized "architectural" shingles are the only way to go. Faster/easier to install, last longer and look better. I've nailed my last three-tab, except for repairs.

rkh,
I saw an ad at menards claiming lifetime shingles. When I went to menards and questioned how the warranty works they said free replacement for the first 15 years then depreciated rate until 50 years. Sounds too good to be true.

Check out Menards and let us know what you find.

Like everything if not done properly shingles or metal will fail. The main key to long life shingles for is to have 4 things, VENTILATION, VENTILATION, MORE VENTILATION and keep trees away so sun can dry them out otherwise you will get moss.

Shingles have a good shelf life, just keep them dry and out of the sun.

Alson install them when it is hot enough for them to seal down. If they don't seal and you get dirt on that tar strip the next big wind will take them off, especially the cheap ones!
