Voltage question

I just purchased a 1955 IH 300/U. It has a Delco Remy generator #1100042. Is this a 6 or a 12 volt generator? I have not had time to dig into everything, but the PO has a 12 volt battery installed, and connected to negative ground.

Originally a 6v pos ground, now it is what ever someone made it to be. if it charges reliably leave it alone! Jim

As Jim said 6 volt when new but the only way to know for sure i the charging system work is to put a volt meter across the battery first when not running and you should get 12.5 volts give or take a bit and when running if the charging system is working and putting out correct voltage for charging you should get 13-14 volts

Reminds me of our class clown in 1962 sitting in the back of physics class, cracking jokes, playing pranks, not paying attention, teacher asked "Now what's the product of volts time amps????? UHHH..... JIM!!!!" He jerked his head up, blank look on his face, we all chuckled he went pale and asked "Uhhhh, What????" "RIGHT! WATTS! Good answer!!! Jim is a retired Delta pilot now, but we still bring that up at class reunions.
