It was called select-a- speed. It was a powershift that the engineer who built said was not ready for production. Henry Ford fired him and built them anyway. John Deere hired him and told him to build a good powershift which he did with the eight speed introduced with the 3020 and 4020. The engineer was Harold Brock and he really helped Deere.Tom

Those old 8000/9000 Fords are good old tractors had an 8000 for awhile but you can also pour a lot of $$$$ into one so $1700 may or may not been a good deal.Did it run?

I had never heard that before.
Ran a JD 4020 Powershift quite a bit in the early to mid 70's and really liked it - Till I got to run a 4430!

I am sorry that 8 speed power shift JD had was not a great transmittion, pulled too much Horse power off the engine to shift. We had a 3020 with it and hated that tractor, worked for a guy who traded a 4430 in on a 4640 which was supposed to be an upgrade in power but the 4640 with powershift would not pull as much as the 4430 with quad range. Just my dealing with that tranny.

There's more to that story than what you told. A 4640 Powershift is quite a lot of tractor. I doubt there's a 4430 out there that could come close to the power of a healthy 4640 powershift.

You are right about the 3020, especially if it was a gasoline model. They weren't overly blessed with power in the first place, and the powershift made them a dog. Completely different beast versus a 4430 or 4640.
