Mitts Merrill Wood Chipper

Hi, I have an older M&M wood chipper. It has a 16 inch diameter chipper drum, and a large Ford V8 engine in it. The V8 is probably a 390, but could be a 460 - I do not know how to tell the difference. My question is, does anybody know what the governor should be set at for the top speed? Mitts & Merrill (Karl Kuemmmerling, Inc.) no longer exists. The owner's manual does not list the speed. I cannot find a good "chipper" forum to ask this on. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you, Greg

Should be somewhere around 1800 RPMS. That's where those engines HP/torque curse were best at. You can look that up. Should be able to find a stationary industrial engine spec online.

Wood chippers that used the Ford V8 used the 360/361, 390/391, 428 and 460 engines.

Thank you for the reply. I looked for dyno curves for the stationary engines, and have only come up with the 390FE series of engines so far. They seem to have maximum torque at around 3300 rpm when stock. I am going to continue to look for the stationary version.

One way to tell between a 460 and a 390 is the joint between the intake manifold and the cylinder head. On the 390 as well as other Y-block engines, the joint is under the valve cover. On the 460 that joint is outside the valve cover.
