Simpson 260 VS Lab Power Supply

Hello,

Old meter still tells the truth. I'm guessing less the 1/2 volt high reading on all ranges. I think close enough for the old meter

Hello martin Reese,

I do use it at times, but the voltages I usually need to measure I need a meter with the volt decimal. Students at schhol fryed the ohm scale range. It may be hard to find a resistor for that circuit. Some day later project! Cheapo HF is what I have on the bench,

I knew it was a Simpson first glance, before I read the name on the dial. As I said before. We used them in some of what we did that required an "integrating" meter movement....aka analog. Calibration lab said they'd quit calibrating them as they were out of date, meaning we'd have to stop using them. Couple of phone calls to the right folks (those interested in shipping a quality product on time) and guess what........cal lab changed their minds.

Just do not drop it.. Best case it will take out the meter movement, worst case it will break the Bakelite case and take out the meter movement. Back when we were using 260s for field techs we stocked meter movements, seem to remember that were ~$60.00 back then, can't imagine what they cost today.

Don't forget to zero the meter with the screw right over the meter pivot point first and take your readings from straight on. I don't remember if the 260 ever came with a mirrored scale or not. See if doing those things help your measurements.

Hello Bob Reeves,

I have it on the bench. I'm more apt to let the smoke out then dropping it. I have another one, I think the ohms scale works, may make one out of two. A winter project?

Hello mozark,

There are a few variations. Some models do have a mirror scale. It has been zeroed in the position I use it. New rechargeable batteries I play with need more accuracy then the meter can show. But I'd does what it was delsigned to do though,

s you no doubt know, accuracy/precision and resolution are two different things.

But who knows what the accuracy of the power supply is now.

Anyway, close enough for government work.

Hello Ozlander,

We are not splitting the Atom here. I just wanted to see if the old 260 was close to the lab supply. I am not setting A standard with the power supply either. Just show and tell...........

Hello Mel in SW Iowa,

I keep the 260 on the bench as a second meter. Sometimes I need two for checking voltage and amps at the same time. Otherwise my go to meter is the infamous HF freebie. I am mostly working a cordless tool batteries, NO space craft instrument accuracy needed,

Guido.

Hello Texasmark1,

Show and tell was my intent. My lab power supply is not that old. So that is what I calibrate all my meters with.
Harbor Freight freebies have a voltage calibrating pot inside. No other pot I can see. never checked for amp side against the lab power supply. No lunar module electrical work here. Most of the time I am comparing cell or pack capacity. The same load for each cell or pack is important, more then splitting the atom accuracy!

Guido.

Hello Billy Shafer,

What a GUY! Thanks for the offer. But I have two, hoping to make a good one out of them. Probably a winter project though. May be some one here would like to have it.

My "go to" meter is still my old Triplett 310. It's been used and abused for over 30 years(by me) and still does the job.

Hello Paul from MI,

Yep! That is a good meter. I just got away from the analog meter and switched to digital. Less knob turning and even tbe cheap ones are pretty good,

Guido.
