Topping Tulips

If you ever get to Mich in the spring take a trip on US 31 north of Holland Mich in April and may. There are acres of red yellow while and whatever color tulips in bloom. These are latter dug up and shipped all over the US.

I had to know more about this, so I googled. These blooms were not grown for sale. The heads are removed so that the plant will put no more energy into the bloom, diverting it instead to the bulb, which is sold.

In 1970 I was stationed in Germany and I went to holland on leave. The train goes thru fields like these. I went in April and the tulips were just coming open but they had fields of hyacinths that were in full bloom. I have never in my life smelled the air so sweet as it was there

There is a Place in Terre Haute that imports bulbs from Holland. They store then in a cooler and once a week they plant a batch of them so they can sell the cut flowers. Their cutting process damages the bulb. If the flower isn't tall enough they can't sell it. The bulbs have to be a certain size to make a tall enough flower to sell. The bulbs that didn't make a large enough flower are pitched and they start over with new blubs. They sell cut tulips up to mother's day. Force them to blooms by removing them from cooler and plant in a greenhouse.

The flower shop plants just the bottom of the bulb is a sandy soil. Tulips will rot in wet soil.

This past spring I got 100's of rejected bulbs and planted them on a high and dry sandy hill in old abandoned gravel pit. Can't wait for next spring to see what our tulip hill looks like.

look up the story of tulips on youtube very informative and interesting, answers all the questions that are being asked.
