OT: Windows 10 Update

I bit the bullet and bought a new HP computer with Windows 10 in March.

The changeover and learning experience from Vista was not as bad as expected and after a month or so I had everything working on a new wireless network (Comcast, Grrrrrr) and able to use all 3 printers from either the new Win 10 computer or the old Vista computer.

Yesterday, MS forced a major upgrade of Win 10 that changed everything. Yes, I know, I could, perhaps should, have turned off automatic upgrades but left it on so as to receive automatic upgrades to Windows Defender.

The upgrade changed the user interface, making it more difficult to find things that I use routinely, such as Windows, Explorer, Settings, Printers, etc. Hint: Windows/x is your friend with Win 10 but I had not found a real need to use it previously. I also lost all of the network printers.

Has anyone else experienced this "new" upgrade, and does anyone know if the user interface can be changed back to the Win 7 similar Start interface?

Grrrrr.

Mac next time.

We finally hard wired the printer to the router because we kept losing printer connection wirelessly. I don't know how a three printer network works though.

Though it took some doing, I was able to get all 3 wireless printers and both the new Win 10 computer and the old Vista computer connected and functional on the wireless network.

This is mandatory for me as the computers and printers are in different rooms and the printers are used for different purposes (as are the computers).

This is also maddening, as all of this stuff except the hold Vista computer, which which I have had few printer issues, are new. I expect this stuff to work.

Sounds like I'll be back on the phone with HP tech in India/Philippines for who knows how long.

Mine updated the other night and I lost the icon for Quicken. It won't let me put it back on the desktop screen again, only pin it to the taskbar. I'm not 100% sure,I have to check, but I think I lost about two or three weeks of records again, just like when that worthless thing first infested my computer.

I'm running Windows 7 with updates turned off on a 6 computer two printer network and wireless router for guests. If it works why temp fate.

Dean-can you go to System Restore on your computer & use a date thats before your download date, then cancel update?

Glad to know I am not the only one. Couldn't open Quickbooks bout a week ago. Finally called Intuit, Cure was a $350 one time fix it fee plus upgrading to Quickbooks 2016. Tech told me the main problem was Windows 10 didn't play well with Quickbooks 2011. ARRGGHH.

Works now but that was frustrating to say the least.

My wife was at the computer store today with her Mac in order to get it working again after an upgrade. Apples are nice but they ain't perfect and they sure ain't worth the prive.

I would suggest dumping Windows Defender. It does not work as well as purchased protection. Then turn off any and ALL updates. Just about every single time any thing updates on my computer I loose some thing. Either programs not working any longer or not being able to find files/documents.

I learned how to use computers as they evolved because my job required me to be able to use them. Now that I am not longer in that job I find myself just not interested in fighting the darn things anymore. I use maybe half of the programs I used to just because they no longer work like they did or they want me to learn a completely different way of using them. I REFUSE to do that. So QuickBooks, MS Word and other programs are of ZERO use to me any longer. They quit working on my computer and I am no longer going to waste my time fooling around trying to make them work.

I kept my check book balanced for 40 years without any computer program and never had any issues. I can go back to 1970 and get my check book ledger out an look at it. I can not look at my Quicken check book records from just 3-4 years ago as the program they are on will not open with the "NEW" MS 10 compatible program. I now am back to keeping all of my financial data in ledgers just like was done for centuries. No worries of being hacked on them. LOL

My DIL keeps all of the farms records. We bought the programs and the computer she does the record keeping on is totally isolated from the internet or phone connections. In the last 5 years her system has never had an issue. The record keeping program company wants all the "new" programs to be internet bases/connected. She tried that with a separate computer. It crashed twice in under a week when things updated. She sent the program back and unhooked the computer form the internet and installed her old program. Six months later it is still working fine.
