Ariens GT 16-mower deck/lights inquiry

Mow Master

New User
Good morning,

I recently purchase a GT16 (late 70s model). It mowed the first time I used it. However, three areas that worked when I purchased it, suddenly stopped working after I did some heavy cleaning/de-greasing.

1. Blades no longer engage
2. Voltmeter does not show charging
3. Light don't turn on

I just wondered if there could be a central part (electrical?) that is causing the major issues? As a side note, there is a charging issue, but the engine runs fine after installing a charged battery. I would appreciate any thoughts...

Well if you washed it you have got some thing wet that now is not making connection. You may have even blown a fuse. It sounds like your not getting any power that supplies the light/deck clutch/charging system. See if they all are supplied from the same wire/fuse/switch terminal. The voltage regulators require battery voltage to work.

Look for a broken wire or disconnected harness connector. Possibly the cleaning unplugged or broke a wire. Also look for evidence of a hot, melted, or corroded connection. There may also be safety switches in the PTO circuit, like a seat switch.

The charge circuit is a regulator or rectifier, usually found on the side of the motor. It converts AC voltage from the stator under the flywheel, to DC voltage to charge the battery. Usually a red wire from the regulator, should be battery voltage there not running, then slightly higher when running, about 12.5-13 volts.

When you find the other problems, be sure the charging system is working before using the electric PTO. If the battery voltage drops, the PTO will begin to slip and burn up the clutch.

Thank you, Steve. I just saw your reply. I appreciate your help, and I will take a look! Good suggestions!

Hey Steve,

Just a small note to say thank you for your help. I was able to fix the electrical issue. After doing a resistance test on the wiring harness, I found a burned out fuse (over looked at first). Changed the fuse, and the mower is mowing like a dream! Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out!

Hi JD,

I was able to get the mower fixed. I did a resistance test on the wiring harness, which revealed a burned out fuse in the linkage. The fuse was a glass tube about an inch long, so I overlooked it the first time as I'm used to square fuses. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to help me out! I appreciate your advice.
