I am not smart enough to figure this out. I bought a kettle that had cast into rim 40 imperial gallons, I know the imperial gallon is different than the USA gallon. So what should it hold in USA gallons?

48.038 US gallons. Just type in "convert 40 imperial gallons to us gallons" on google and it will do the conversion for you on a website title

As posted, 48 gallons is very close--1 imp. gallon = 1.201 US gallons. Lots of online conversion pages available, and many phone apps as well--in fact, many phones already have one installed. Here's an online one I use frequently.
Online Conversion

160 oz to the imp gal
128 oz to the US gal
and 1 liter is 33.814 oz just 1.814 oz shy of a quart
if it has ltr's marked on it divide by 4 will get you close to US gal plus 1 for every 40 ltr's will get you close

Thanks. It is a old possibly 60 or more year cast iron butchering kettle for my Amish friends.
