How long to wait for payment?

I had something advertised on the classifieds. A guy called and wanted it so I shipped it the following business day. He received the package and said it was as I represented it and would mail the check. That was a week ago. I texted him a few days ago and got no response. Any thoughts?

I would call him and find out. Sometimes texts are not paid attention to, or forgotten about quickly if you don't live by them, like some do. Give him a call. Good luck - Bob

Mail is not nearly as fast used to was. When I was a kid, if you mailed a letter in the AM, it would be delivered the same day. (Van. B.C. in the 50's)

I have purchased and sold from the classifieds here and usually it is customary to send
payment before the seller ships ( not always but customary )

I have bought from a few sellers that sent a bill and I paid upon receiving. I thought I would give it a try. I won't do it again. He was fine talking and texting before he received it.

If he sent it out right away then you might have gotten it by now. I have sent checks just twenty miles and had it take 10 days. As for texts I use them SOME. If I am really busy I do not check them all of the time. I only have my phone tone for calls. Text do not ring/sound. The Grand kids send me texts every few minutes because they send them to "groups". So I many times ignore texts.

I don't send anything till I get the money first. Not uncommon for a letter to take up to ten days to get to me after it is
mailed.

I ordered some parts off ebay from a tractor place 40 miles from me usually are here in 2 days that one time they traveled about 1000 miles so go figure. That said not getting a response
is a very bad sign. But have you text him before? Because if you text me you'll never get an answer because I know nothing about it.I suggest posting the person's name if you don't get a response down in buyer feed back if its clear he's trying to stiff you.

Thanks guys! I will wait a little longer and try to contact him again.
We have sent text back and forth with no problem.

Keep after him HARD!! This delay means he is hoping to keep from paying. He is testing you and comparing you to others that he owes. Contact him multiple times a day until you have it.

Check with whatever site you advertised and sold through, they may have limits like Ebay does. Ebay has protection I think they told me for 90 days, after that you're on your own. I became a member of theirs maybe a year ago when I made my first ever purchase, a matching pair Dana 60 front and Dana 80 rear for a 3/4 ton Dodge I'm building. I won the bid, paid the guy, he texted me right away that he'd be shipping them and as soon as he had, he'd give me the particulars. Months went by texting back and forth and with one excuse after another why I didn't receive the axles, and me leaving voice mails. Might have been a day shy of their limit that I didn't know about, and I contacted Ebay and they put me in touch with PayPal, their financial watch dog on everything purchased, PayPal or not. I gave PayPal my story and proof, they contacted the seller for his side of the story, PayPal found in my favor and acting as Ebay's insurance company so to speak, reimbursed me in full. What happened between them and that seller, I have no idea. Point though...they told me they had a time limit for such things, and I think it was 90 days. The whole thing put a bad taste in my mouth so it was my first and last purchase.

Good luck,

Mark

You are indeed a trusting soul. You sent out merchandise to a complete stranger without payment. Now he has possession and you have nothing but a bit of contact information.

IF you are dealing with an honorable person, you should receive payment shortly. If not, you will have to chase the person. In either case, there is a lesson to be learned here. Payment should be received before sending out merchandise. Better still, go through a third party like PayPal. Good luck.

CALL NOW. Don't text anymore. Don't give him more time.

Use a work phone or another number he hasn't seen before, not your cell. That way you can catch him unawares just in case he's avoiding you.

You may end up just chalking this up to a lesson learned. Hope there wasn't much money involved.

Of course, if I posted a similar question where I sent payment and the seller never delivered the item, I supposed you'd all be telling me to not send payment until I receive the item! How, you've never sent payment before having the item in hand and being satisfied with it.

That poses a dilemma in that if he doesn't send the item until I pay and I don't pay until I receive the item, how do we make a transaction?
