Hauling a john deere235 disk

My dad bought a john Deere 235 disk about 40 miles away on back roads. It is a 20 footer
without a harrow. He asked me to get it home. What is the weight of this disk? Can I pull it safely
behind our Chevy Silverado 1500 HD 4x4?

Joe

I wouldn't know why not, assuming your roads are not extremely hilly or winding and has a little width to them. I'd do it anyway, just don't hurry. Bob

Rule #1 make sure it is hitch heavy or it will sway bad and check tires to mske sure they can stand 20mph remember those tires probably arent for hi-way use so go slow make sure th SMV sign is good and in plain sight a flashing yellow lite mite also be a good idea

Yes disk harrow can be pulled with a 1/2 ton PU but stopping is the main concern. Be sure tongue is adjusted to provide good amt of tongue weight on PU. I'd advise utilizing some magnetic base warning lights. Yrs back I pulled a 27' 335 disk harrow about 225 miles from outside Okla City to 30 miles south of Ft Worth

Hook a chain to the hitch pin and one side of the disc and bind it tight to take up the slack in the hitch, that will help keep it from swaying. Check the air and wheel bearings and go slow. My brother and I pulled a case 25' disc from Indianna to minnesota behind an f250 once.

I have been told by DOT agents if you go over 25 m.p.h. to remove the SMV sign. He said you would get a ticket if you went faster than that with a sign mounted. You can also get a ticket hauling a tractor or implement with a sign still mounted on it and exceeding 25 m.p.h. I would suggest magnetic tail lights in this situation as well. Mike

Your statement is true BUT only if one gets caught!!!

I've pulled farm equipment 1000's of miles over 25 mph with SMV attached to the rear of implement without getting the 1st ticket.

I would just tow it. Go slow and you will be fine. You can drive the forty miles in two hours at 20 MPH. You will not have to worry about tires and bearing as much towing slower too. I see fools towing implements at 50-60 MPH down the road. The majority of FARM implements are not designed to be towed at highway speeds.

The JD 235 20 ft disk should be a center fold. It should not bee much over 11-12 feet wide. The weight would be in the 7000-8000 LBS range.

Back in '83 I towed a 24' folding IH disc 200 miles with a 1ton GMC flat bed. Cruised 50 mph most of the time, except up the hills.

40 miles is nothing even if you only go 15 MPH. Some farmers go that far between fields. How loose is the tongue? My 235 sways a little behind the tractor at 20 MPH because the tongue pivots are worn and sloppy.

20 years ago I pulled a 21 ft IH 470 disk 90 miles home with a 1991 Ford Ranger...I took the back roads with very little traffic in nearly level country...I went about 20-25 mph and had no problems except for one blown disk tire......It took about 5 hours..

About 15 years ago I pulled a 21 ft Krause 1904 disk 100 miles home with a 1967 Ford F-100 Ranger...I went 25-30 MPH with a friend following me...Again I had no problems..There were several hills and I took it slow going down them..

It all depends on where you live....If you live where theres lots of traffic, hilly or windy narrow roads, towns, etc it might be a problem..

Chain the hitch as stated(I have done it for years). If you tow it,it is a farm implement,if you haul it, and you are over 15ft, you are now a super wide load. You now need a permit and maybe escorts too.

The rear springs on half ton pickups are not very stiff. With the disk folded up it will have a high center of gravity that will push down hard on your pickup's rear bumper when you apply the brakes. With no brakes on that heavy a disk (6,000 to 8,000 pounds?) you would be iffy to control the disk at much over tractor speeds.

Your dad probably already has a 125+ HP tractor to pull the disk. At 16 to 20 MPH road speed the trip would only take four to five hours of road time with the tractor, and the tractor would already have the SMV sign and flashing lights you will need. I would tell dad you will need to use his tractor to tow the disk.
