So I hit it with a hammer

My GF's daughter's van would not start. I told them a few things to check. No Luck, so Sunday we drove two hours north to help her. I got the shield loose from the starter, but the shield would not come off without removing the exhaust. So I tapped the starter with a hammer. It has started every time since. She intends replace the starter. I just did not want to take a chance on breaking manifold studs two hours from home. One of those rare times that a hammer is the right tool for the job. I had told them to try that the night before, but it turns out that they thought the alternator was the starter. I did not say a word.

I can second that. I can't tell how many times I've been hit with a broom handle but it has never failed to give me a start.

Some newer vehicles have a magnet starter. Have to be careful with those as you can break the magnets.

(quoted from post at 18:11:59 08/22/16) Probly NO wrong applications for a hammer. BFH is not always the best choice. ;^)

Yep, if it can't be fixed with a BFH and/or a 10R ViseGrip it ain't worth havin' anyway.

Yup, very few problems in life that can't be solved with a .45, 30/06, and a BFH. Lol!

I have on occasion used the: if one good whack didn't do the trick, hit it harder! (or get a bigger hammer)
