John Deere B - school me

Wife and I went to look at a 48 B today. Great shape, all original
tractor. Has never sat outside in its life. Runs great, brand new
rear tires. Only has a couple flaws, which I'd like to know how
difficult are to fix.

1. Leaking rear axle seals. How difficult are they to replace?
I've got a good shop to work in so that's not an issue.

2. Slop in the hand clutch linkage. Same question. Difficult or
easy? It's not too bad, just sloppy. It still snaps over center
pretty good. Not necessarily high priority once I get it home, but
would still like it to function properly.

I appreciate anyone's opinion on this. Ill have a manual on the
way soon. And as always, I'll have pictures as soon as I get her
home.

Thanks,

Mac

It's likely that condensation has collected in the trans case, raising the oil level above the seal lips. Unscrew the drain plug a couple threads and see how much water comes out .If you get more than a cup , it may solve your problem .
There is a special puller , like a pitman arm puller to remove the clutch lever pivot bolt. Do not hit it with a hammer or drift , the ear on the case can snap right off. Use the puller and using shim washers , tighten up the slop in the lever.

That little puller is made by Sunsdahls in Fairbault, Mn. 507 334 8966. Deere has new pivot pin/ bolts that will eliminate the slop in the clutch lever. The axle seals are available and are not hard to change after you get the wheel off but like was said it might just be a little too full. Hope this helps. Tom

Mac, that puller from Sunsdahl's is a sort of spendy item. My brother ridiculed me for buying one. Guess who was right there to borrow it when he needed to remove the pin on his. Well worth the peace of mind in my humble opinion.

Nope! But thanks for asking anyway. I haven't had a 2-popper since I was a kid and I'm gonna play with this one a while before I let it go. I would've rather had a '37 A, but the B has more modern amenities (if you could say that) than the old un-styled ones. They still don't stack up with the IH's I've ran and owned (sorry green guys) but this is more of a nostalgia thing you might say.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice guys. That puller is spendy, Popper, you're right. $66.00! But, it may save my clutch lever so I'll get one on the way sometime in the future. I haven't even gotten the blasted thing home yet and already I'm planning what to do with it!
