I am going to seed millet or oats for a cover crop and haven't used seeder for decades.

It depends on the weight of seeds, and the speed of the rotor. Best practice is to test it on a flat clean surface and do a seed count. Use a hula hoop to determine seed count. Jim
Will vary depending on weight and type of seed along with travel speed, faster the wider spread. Only way to know is if you can find a large concrete area to try it on at speed you are wanting to run and put the seed in and make a pass and then take a tape measure and measure it.

50ft is common you dont need a cover unless you want to harvest the oats. Preparing the soil is important if you want a smooth job when finished you didnt say what type of grass you want to grow.

2.5 MPH or 5 MPH sprocket? We always drove 5 MPH. Dad said it has the high speed sprocket (s)? If you have been around the seeder in the past even if it is decades you will remember the tempo of the song the gears sing. If I remember right we used to spread 10 40" rows or somewhere around 33 feet. I can't tell you exactly how wide to open the slides but it seems like 1" initial setting for 1 1/2 bushels of oats per acre for a nurse crop depending on the weight of the oats.

Tom I had forgotten about that. I will ask my dad next time I see him. He used to mention so many seeds per hoof print.
