John Deere 70

Just picked up new used head for my gas John Deere 70 tractor anyone know what the head bolts torque pounds are? and is there a sequence to follow? also I have new lead washers and head nuts but should I put silicone around the head studs then use washer and then nut? what keeps water from leaking around the studs? thanks Howard

Torque on head bolts is listed as 208 ft lbs. Start in the center, and work toward the outside. No need for silicone, the lead washers are to lube the nut against the surface of the head and the threads. When I torque a two cyl head, I start at 50 lbs, and work up by 25 lb increments.

I have gone to using Thin HARDENED Washers between the Nut and the Lead Washers...the lead washer still squashes but does not squeeze out around the Nut..

Those Lead slivers are SHARP..!!

Just Lube the threads and be SURE to Re-Torque after the tractor engine has be run for plenty time to really be "Heat-Soaked", so the Head Bolts will have heated and expanded(lengthwise)..

While the engine is still HOT and after you have Re-Torqued the Head, be sure to Re-Adjust the Valve Clearances..
