replacing ring gear

so, I split my TO-20 and am in process of replacing the ring gear. I ordered a new one, so I am waiting. Meantime, here are a couple comments and a question: A guy I know split his 9N Ford some years back to replace the ring gear and he put a new clutch pad in too. Told me he was sorry he did as the newer ones are not as good as the old asbestos types. I was going to leave my old one in. Next thing: the pilot bearing is perfect. I cleaned it and re-packed w/grease. Now, for the question: The throw out bearing has a grease fitting. I plan to grease it. But, how the heck was anyone ever going to get to that thing without splitting the tractor? Owner manual doesn't mention it and there is no access.

New clutches work fine, I would do that while I was in there, not sure how those tractors are setup but later Ford's as well as big trucks have a grease line coming out to grease them

If you want to insure a good clutch, replace the disc, pressure plate and resurface the flywheel.
All surfaces must be flat and true to have full surface contact.
If you lay a straight edge across your pressure plate or flywheel you may find the surfaces are not flat.

You could buy a 12-18" grease hose and drill a hole in the 4 bolt plate (the one with the wiggle pin ) to bring it out where you could grease it . I have seen them where there is bulkhead fitting on one end , 1/8 inch pipe thread internally and 3/8 machine thread with a nut and star washer to mount the hose .

The TO20's have a reputation for the ring gear to work back off the flywheel, especially if it's converted to 12 volt. Might want to tack weld it a few places while you have it off.

Also replacing the front transmission seal is an easy job while it's apart.

Unless it's a low budget necessity, I would replace the clutch, pp, and release bearing while in there.

I too like to be able to grease bearings, but the fact is if the bearing feels smooth now and you grease it and put it in it will probably last 20 years if you don't ride the clutch or rest your foot on the clutch pedal.
