Points. Magneto. Upgrade ?

Simply put no. Timing the maximum flux density for the switching to take place is possible, but the mag advantage is works with no battery. To humble that advantage, might take engineering beyond the value. Jim.

What tractor are you wanting to put EI in Gary?
You might be able to swap in a distributor with EI.
You'd need to do some re-wiring.

now why would you want to spoil a magneto like that even if it was possible. you will not find anything more dependable than a magneto. i just bought a W-30 mccormick that was sitting probably at least 30 years in an open field. all i did to get spark was clean the points. and plenty of spark now and running today. brought it home saturday. i do not know what the gain is in electronic ignition with a mag. as they put out plenty of spark to set u on your bum. those old engines are chuggers and lug good. not like these new engines that need rpm to have power.

Thanks Rustred - I too got this one ... not running .. it had set for at least 20 yrs INSIDE an old barn ... dry ..
I cleaned the points and it fired !! This is a little John Deere H 1946

Hi "Royse" .. :) THx
I have a John Deere H 1946
I have bought electronic ignitions for Farmall H and JD B from Pertronix !
The coil that comes with them puts about 40,000 volts to plugs instead of 10,000 volts ...
you can widen the plugs and they burn more - better - giving much more power ..
Was just wondering if there was an EL IG sold for mags ....
(the ones I have literally set right in where the points were - and the coil "Flame Thrower" come with the kit for 6 volt/positive ground or 12 volt with
negative ground .. etc .. )

Thanks much
Gary

It would be REALLY interesting to run a tractor through the "Nebraska Test" (or equivalent) with a good set of points and your magic ignition system and actually VERIFY your "much more power" claim!

(Just for the record, we are talking about working farm tractors here, not some exotic high RPM "puller" toy.)
