OT Sump Pump Problem Solved w/ IH 574

Our sump pump kept filling up during rains lately. Well I found that the discharge pipe outside had become disconnected from the basement wall allowing all the water to be recirculated. The sump pump was tied in with the down spout lines underground some where and that became clogged. So much of the rain water ran down the outside wall of the basement too. I ran a temporary line on top of the ground until a mini excavator could get here and dig the trench. Anyway here's some pictures. Used my IH 574 to back fill the trench and to keep it tractor related. Any ideas how to landscape the discharge end of the pipes will be greatly appreciated.

That's quite the project, John. Always seems to be problems when the downspouts get run underground. Around here, many of the home builders decided to tie them into the sanitary sewer (illegally), so now we pay to process the rain water wit the sewage.

Our sump pump discharge and foundation drains run to a catch basin surrounded by ornamental grass, which eventually drains to the ditch.

From the looks of the lay of the land you could cut that pipe at a 45 so you can still mow over it. Its not going to rain all the time and i wouldnt image that the end of the pipe it would stay wet. Personally i would dig a hole under the end of the pipe put about 5 gallon bucket of wash stone under it and cover the rock with a layer of dirt but not the end of the pipe. rake everything out smooth throw some grass seed out and a little straw over it. good to go. From all the pics i saw you did a really good job on the repair.

Virtually no one anywhere near me, inn the city or rural areas, runs storm water underground. Period. I do not understand why the gutters don't discharge to downspouts directly into the yard and why the sump doesn't discharge above ground level through a much higher hole in the foundation. We freeze here, but a slight down angle to the sump discharge pipe keeps it from holding water and freezing. Looks like you could have saved thousands of bucks by simplifying the setup.

If the outlet end is still exposed on the earth cut shown, putting a6 to 8" layer of broken cinder block then round river stone of 4 to 6 inch size will look good and prevent washout. Extend the rock onto the near flat area beyond so the flow is mellowed. Jim

I have places here water seeps out of
the ground in winter and freezes so much
it will freeze up and fill a ditch a
foot deep over time and overflow and
gotta run it underground often to
prevent these things

Good job. Maybe you should put a flap type check valve on the end to keep a rat from going inside the pipe, and dying. Stan

If the gutter downspouts and/or sump pump discharge low directly on to the ground, and if the house has a basement or low spots under the house, the water will
flow back under the house. BTDT.

Ours discharges through a low stone wall onto a grass strip next to the driveway. We put some flat stones under the end of the pipe to keep it from washing out. Grass has grown over most of it so you hardly see it now. Only bad thing is in the winter we get some ice on the drive but it's never been bad enough to cause a problem.

There are tens of thousands of homes in central Kansas where that simply doesn't happen, and most of us have basements. You do have to have your dirt graded correctly, but that is a one-time thing.
