Who made this engine for Sears?

I purchased an old chipper/shredder and I'm not sure what brand engine this is. I haven't worked on one like it before. Perhaps tecumseh? I'm not sure how to remove the fuel tank, or the pull starter. Looks like the tank snaps on at one end and slides in to slots in a frame. Perhaps if I knew the type engine I could find a Youtube video of one being pulled apart. Need to replace the fuel line, clean the carb, and probably more. :) Any advise would be appreciated.

The info from the engine id sticker only says it's a sears engine model 143.965021 and date of mfg. 6120-A

The sticker for the chipper model number is unreadable. :( So if I need parts I'll have to guess at the model.

Might want to look the chipper end over before investing a lot of time in it.

The little direct drive chippers were prone to bending/breaking the crankshaft if fed too much too fast.

That is a Tecumseh. They painted some black and called them Power Sport engines. It is a good engine, just needed a better carburetor than the one that came on it.

As others have said... it's a Tecumseh. I've dealt with one that runs a vent fan and if it's not run frequently the carb gums up. Often times removing the plug and priming it with fresh gas will get it running fast enough to clear itself after you soak the carb with combustion chamber cleaner....

Right on both counts. No problems if you remember to shut off the gas and run the carb dry EVERY time you use it. Let it sit for a few weeks with gas in the carb and you'll have problems. In my case, the idle passages got blocked so it would just surge if it wasn't under load. Some of the passageways can't be accessed to clean them out because of the way the carb is manufactured; I ended up replacing my carb.

I have a Coleman generator that has this engine on it. It will not start unless you spray carb cleaner in the carb. If you do that, she first up and will run great. Just will not start without the stray. Never figured out way. Any thoughts?

Don't spend too much effort on the carb you can buy a new one for $15,I bought 2 5,000W generators at an auction that weren't running with similar engines for $35 two new carbs and
they're both running and operating great.

John, those had a history of being difficult to start. The primer circuit didn't work well.

If the rubber bulb is old and hard, try replacing it. The bulb needs to be pushed in fully and quickly, you're not pumping gas with it, but puffing air into the carb bowl to push some fuel up into the intake. If it says prime it 5 times, try about 15 times!

Where does one find this rubber bulb? Refer to the original poster's pictures.

We had identical riding mowers with the same Tecumseh 16 hp industrial engine. My father's had a carburetor with a metal bowl. Mine had a lot more plastic parts. Every year I had to replace the inside O-rings. They would swell up and block functioning. This carburetor was a nightmare. Mine was newer so some beancounter at Tecumseh product improved it (not).

No, that's called having a friend do you a favor... Markup on parts is what keeps the lights on at businesses that sell parts.
I can't imagine where anyone would get a carb for anything for less than 100 bucks in this area...

There is a lot of competition these days you just gotta look around in my area there are lots of places selling L&G stuff so they're looking to make a deal.I imagine he'd be glad to sell you all you want for $25 each the reason he sells to me at cost is I give him very good prices on used parts.

OK, TF. Just who is this benevolent dealer who sells Tecumseh P/N 640340 for the bargain price of 25 bucks? It seems Jacks Small Engines wants three times that much!

By the way, that's the exact same carb as is on my engine and is probably the same carb as is on the original poster's chipper. The one you say sells for fifteen bucks.
Tecumseh carburetor 640340

The carbs I got, actually he went over both engines, installed the carbs and the charge was $15 each for both new carbs are on 10 HP TEC engines that are on Coleman Generators what the number is I have no idea but they look the same as the one in the picture. And I'm sure he isn't selling them to me below his cost.

OK, so you can get a replacement for less than twenty bucks. They appear to be Chinese copies, but are probably good enough.

Probably all those engines are made in China nowadays anyway they sure can't make a worse Carb than the originals on the TEC engines, the two generators run like a champ BTW.
