Howard Rotovator

I've heard of people putting grease in a leaky gear box of a Bush Hog to replace gear oil. Has anyone every used grease in the chain drive in a Rotovator? The bottom seal is leaking and it is a big job to take it apart and I don't know if parts are available. I rebuilt the other side years ago and I had to get parts from England.

Yup. I use "corn head" grease in my old Rotavator.

I put the second new seal in the bottom of the chain case 3-4 years ago and it started leaking again almost immediately, so I put a tube of grease in it, poured a cup of 90wt on top to be sure and have been running it ever since.

My dad had an Off-brand bush hog (cant remember the make) that the gearbox was made for grease only. He didn't like the wine it made, & so he added some gear oil, & made it a lot quieter, & didn't leak. Get ready for some serious noise... Possibly!

be sure to get corn head grease as other grease will cut out or stand up and just be beside the gears. ch grease stays soft and will melt in on gears.john deere has it

CH grease would work the best. But I added regular grease and a little 90wt to make it flow. works good and a lot easier than replacing seals

We use Gear Box grease in tubes. stays more liquid than corn head grease.
We run it in our Kubota ZTR mowers, they are not noisy

No trouble with the gearbox on my 30 year old Rotavator. Changed the oil once or twice, but original seals and gears. Also make sure the slip clutch is operational every Spring before tilling season.

Chain case is a different story. Due, I assume, to our rocky conditions. I have replaced seals, bearings and chain twice. Main shaft is bent just enough to be visible if you look close, but the price of a new shaft (if they're even still available) was roughly half of a new tiller. I just put the grease to it and I'll run it until one of us breaks down permanently...

I believe he is referring to corn head grease sold by Deere. I run it in a lot of my gearboxes.

Used to see quite a few of those rotovators. I have a dumb question, will they tear up sod like a 3 point hitch rototiller?

Picked up some 00 gun grease from my fuel suppler for my brush hog gear boxes last year.

Yes If the bottom seal fails the gear set only last a few minutes.
By the time you can smell warm or hot oil the gears are toast
We have not lost one since we started using gear box grease

If you need the cornhead grease and can't find it, I found a recipe on the internet someplace that said to mix #2 grease 50/50 with 90 wt gear oil. I mixed some up and put it in the rototiller, works great.

I will ad that you can use the OO green slimy oil grease. Same stuff used in the gear drive on a Snapper mower. Great stuff.

A rotovator is the same as a rototiller, just heavier...I have four 60" Howard Select-a-tilths and an 80" select-a-tilth and they are all 3pt mounted. I just put a few shots of gun grease in the gearbox along with 90-140wt....smells great...not!
