Mounting trailer winch battery

Hey guys! Wanting to mount a battery to my new flatbed for the winch. Trailer is a tilt bed and I would like to mount it inside the frame, under the bed. That will give me access to it when trailer is tilted but out of the way otherwise. I am looking at the Southwest Speed #499-903 bolt on box, and the Torklift HiddenPower mount.

Both will fit the Group 24 deep cycle I'll be using.

The Southwest Speed is alot cheaper, but I'm not sure if the battery should be "protected" inside of one of the molded plastic boxes. What do you think?

Torklift HiddenPower is a nice setup, and comes with the plastic box, but is made as vehicle specific so I'm trying to get in contact with them to see if any of their models will fit a 2x5" frame rail.

Also, can I splice into the 12+ wire charging the break-away battery through the trailer plug and extend it to charge the winch battery as well?

Thanks for the help!

Trust me, so not put it under the best as good as that sounds, it's when the bed won't tilt that you will need access too it.

I'll still be able to get to it even with the bed flat. It's a manual tilt trailer so really shouldn't be too many issues there.

I agree with jon f,put it where it is easy, and safer, to get to.It will need attention at the most inconvenient time. And under the trailer,it will be dirtier, rustier than out side where you can keep an eye on it.Mark

Mine is a hydraulic tilt and the battery is located in the tool box on the hitch just ahead of the bed. The winch has a short set of jumper cables that you just hook up if and when you need to use the winch. Works real good and very convenient.

A friend of mine had long cables hooked to the battery of his truck that ran all the way to the back with plug in connectors on them. His winch battery had short cables with corresponding connectors. Whenever he used the trailer he would plug those in and the alternator on his truck kept both the truck battery and the winch battery charged.

I would mount the battery on the tong of the trailer and make cable with "Tough Stuff Quick Winch Connectors" to run the winch when needed. That is how we have the removable winch on my sons Jeep.
