Short cut through my yard

I am working outside my shop area. I see a pickup I haven't seen before drive in and keep going, out the other side. I realize that guy is using my yard for a short cut to the next street. The traffic is real heavy past my place in the after noon. I am going to put a stop to that real quick. The drive way starts out pavement, and turns to dirt past my daughters house. Which makes a lot of dust. I imagine that happens a lot through farmed fields also. Stan

Good luck nipping that one. Not many years ago friends went out one day to discover that an adjacent land owner had decided to bulldoze a road through their place. Seems he wanted access without dealing with the swampy area on his place. So, he simply decided to cut a road across someone else's property without so much as a 'howdy do'. You have to ask how they ever thought that was a good idea. Please let us know how this shakes out.

37,

I've found that pointing a camera at the offender, with them looking at me, and looking like you are sending it may make some stop.

Otherwise can you put a car across the drives?

D.

A 2x12 with spike up through them ought to do the trick. Bet he will think before he crosses someone's yard the next time. 😊😊

The first house I bought, I found myself on a property with the neighbor owning the property on each side of me. It was the father on one side, and the house on the other was occupied time to time by his grown dysfunctional boys.

I could not stop them from driving through my yard! They did it just for meanness, no reason for it!

Well, I guess I could have stopped them, but it was a battle I chose to decline! The whole bunch was beg-bug crazy!!!

I think all his boys had been to prison, one was brain damaged from being hit in the head fighting in the pen!

The daddy was a big time slum lord around the town, evidently had some pull at city hall. His house was surrounded by junk cars, none running, all for sale for more than they cost new! Had dogs running loose, barking all night, weeds head high... Police did nothing, he was in violation of every city ordnance ever written!

The brain damaged son next door, one time he chased his wife out of the house with a shotgun, had a stand-off with the police on his front porch. They finally talked him into unloading the gun and promise not to shoot at his wife any more!

So, a few tracks through the yard, oh well... At least I managed to get out of there alive!

Here that will allow the to opportunity to buy them a new set of tires and may even let you meet Bubba, in person!

Do you think he heard you yet?

Maybe a disk and garden hose in the dirt road part. Then charge for pulling him out. Don't forget he/she has to hook to their own car, that way when you pull the bumper off it is not your fault.

I'm forever amazed by the cars that come strolling through the barnyard (a quarter mile off the blacktop mind you). About the time they realize you have spotted them they have some excuse about their third cousin Howard who used to live out here and they thought this was the place. Uh, no. Did the century farm sign at the end of the drive confuse you??! It's usually Sunday drive goers of the elderly persuasion.

Maybe a couple speed bumps that way you can use it and not worry about somebody getting hurt with spikes. Also when they slow down you can get a good picture. I like the idea of water maybe a small pond with a sign piranhas present.

Don't you need s loading dock? Positioned with the down ramp centered in the drive and the dock tactfully positioned for maximum benefit: yours. Abrupt stoppage.

I have three or four of the old type drag harrows. Each one has about 30 steel teeth. If you had several sections of those, you might just decide to store them in that drive area. Upside down.

I have apartment people who come over the block wall looking at my gardens. They pick what they need and then leave. I guess I give out a lot of free food lately. I have a bunch of old tooth harrow forks rakes and I have put them upside down by the block wall. No body has came over the wall lately I wonder why? If you give them some flat tires they might just think before they go that way again.

A lot of ideas presented tonight. I can't put anything sharp, as I will run over it. when mowing I see a big rock on the next pass. By the time I come around I forgot all about the big rock, and hit it head on. I will do the same thing with my driveway. Problem I live a block away, just driving through, no one is around. My daughter lives on the end, and thinks the vehicle may come to see me. I am going to park my tractor in the road. The guy will have to back up, as he can't see the tractor from the road. Stan

i use the 2 x 12 board with nails too, around here i guess were less civilized out here any suggestion of us or any other rural property owner buying the trespassers a new set of tires for damage caused to their vehicle while trespassing on our pvt property may cause that person to go missing, permanently

Just a thought I'm not sure how long your driveway is but on one end come in with a gate half way or better than on the other end a gate from the opposite in again part way . It will appear from the road as if there is a gate all the way across but in reality you will have to drive in an s to get through that would be ok for you but most guys in a hurry won't do that. But unless someone slows down it will appear to be closed off. A second option would be to plant a hedge that way again blinding a person to the fact it gives access to the other street

It depends on the state as to what's legal. Here the board with nails is considered a "trap" and you are not only liable for damages but can face criminal charges too.

We had a neighbor kid here about 10 years ago who was trespassing on other peoples property. Land owner (arrogant BTO) shot the kids tires on his pickup while the kid was hunting. The land owner was charged with criminal damage to property and discharging a firearm for a roadway and when the trial was over he got probation, a large fine and was ordered to pay restitution to the kid. The bad part was when the cops got there the kid, who's truck was parked in the right of way was at his truck and no actually saw him trespass. So he faced no charges. It is kinda funny, get around that BTO land owner today and mention the kid's name and he gets mad, quick! Lot of locals mess with him over it.

Here our cops are pretty smart. If spiked someone tires they would know about it. Then if they took legal action against you and they disappeared the cops would be looking directly at you.

FWIW: That kid has turned to and has turned into a pretty decent young man with a reputation of being a good worker.

I had people using my driveway at a rental property as a short cut between two roads, I put a shed in the way and then steel fence posts up so they couldn't drive around shed, then keep out private property signs. Stopped problem.

I think that a good place to start would be with a nice big "NO TRESPASSING" sign, a "NO THOROUGHFARE" sign, and a gate across the end of the driveway. The traps and other means of damaging the offender's vehicle could result in more problems than you want. After all, do you want to hurt the offender or just make him stop?
I might also suggest watching for the offender and stopping him while on your property and simply telling him that your driveway is not to be used as his shortcut. Most folks will stop offending once they have been told to stop.
Of course, then there is the law enforcement end of things. A nice ticket for trespassing will do wonders towards stopping bad behavior.

Daughter who lives on a corner lot in town was having same problem couple years ago. Moron lived right behind her was cutting through her yard instead of taking the alley. I waited until he was home and outside and walked over and stood in front of his car a wrote down his license plate number. He walked over to see what I was doing and told him next time I saw tire marks in her yard I would call the police,,, no more short cutting,,,

Township not far from me had trouble with kids running down signs so they built one that when knocked down the base which was a piece of angle iron would flip up into the oil pan. It worked but then they were told not to do it again.

Many years ago, I had some high school buddies whose family owned some property along the highway. There was a small path on the back side of the hill to access their pasture and there was a small ditch there that had a few large wooden bridge planks over it to drive over for pasture access. It turns out that a newly-hired cop like to hide behind that hill and back into that access path and catch speeders on weekends. He did it so often that the path became wore down. The landowner's solution to this was to pull up one of the bridge planks and to drive a few large nail through the wood, just enough to puncture a tire. After the cop had to have all four tires repaired at one time and had to call the tire repair shop to come get the three tires that the spare wouldn't cover, he got the hint and didn't park there any more.

Gates and fences work the best, but they are expensive and gates are a pain to open and close. Some driveways have signs at the entrance: "Private Drive, NO TRESPASSING". I would start with one of those and see if the problem goes away before spending any big money.

Very simple park something in the way. Be it an old drag harrow or a tractor or a car anything to block them form doing it
